Rovers II Tie M'ville
DEL HAVEN - The Express under-16 Rovers II brought Millville down to the soccer fields here Saturday for a game which ended in a 1-1 tie. Tim Kirsch assisted in the single score by David Dills as the defense banded together to aid goalie Bill Sheets. Defensive measures by players like Bill Thomas, Ed Garvin and Jim Nuss. kept the Millville players from chalking up another victory. Sunday wasn't quite as sunny for the Rovers II which suffered a defeat at the hands of the under-16 team from Hamilton. The Express' only score came from Eddie Garvin % as the visitors out maneuvered the Rovers through both offensive and defensive plays. The score book tally the game Rovers 1, Hamilton 4.
After traveling to Willingboro, the under-14 Rovers 1 added yet another victory to their record. Justin Vogel began lighting up the scoreboard with a well-placed penalty kick, followed by a single by John Leahy, double scores by Eddie Edwards, and the last by Paul Shoczoiek. Players assisting with these shots were Kris Ekstrom, John Leahy, Gary Fitz, and Tara Taylor. All-round good team play helped goalie Paul O'Brien and relief goalie Martin St. John to uphold a shut-out game. Back in DelHaven, the under-14 Midnight Special said "Hello" to Millville players. Joey Laffey, assisted by Jason Ftiillips and Mike Campbell off Laffey's corner kick accounted for the two tying scores.
With five minutes left to play, Shawn McAnaney crossed the ball to Aaron Fretz who succeeded in placing the winning shot. Players like Keith Kirsch, Mike Gentile and Pat Nardizzi helped make the Express 3-2 victory possible. Evesharh Township was the next visitor to the fields as it challenged and defeated the under-12 Silver Streak. Joe> Higman put in the only Express goal while defensive players Kathy McNulty, David Nordone and Mike McNulty tried to hold the visitors' shots to a minimum. Final score: Evesham 4. Express 1. -The youngest Express team, the under-10 Golden Flyer racked up a victory with a 1-0 game against Freedom. Jeff Robinson's goal off Mike Barth caused the shut-out, which held due to the super efforts of the youngest Express players: Rachelle Burke, Ryan Magill, and Derek Kirsch.
Cruisers Cement Claim to Second
CAPE MAY - Cape Island Sailing Cruisers defeated Woody's Comer three games to one in the city's Coed Power Volleyball League action. In their 15-13 win in game one, Cape Island was led by defensive stars Sheri llickok with her saves and John Wilsey with his blocks at the net. The spikes of Charles Futcher led the Cape Island team to a 15-12 second game win. In Woody's Corner 15-11 'win in game three, the defensive work of Betty Harshaw and Wendy Bruno, along with the sets of Judy Maxlowe and Buddy Eckel helped key their team's victory. CAPE ISLAND Sailing Cruisers took the final game easily 15-1 thanks to the teamwork of Charles Futcher and John Wilsey. Lighting Dimensions strengthened its hold on first place with a, four-game shutout of J.T. Builders, 1S4, 15-8, 15-2 and 15-10. The serves of Bill Holt and Jan Seer helped Lighting Dimensions to its first game victory. The play of Pete Kakoyannis and Seer, along with the serves of Holt, proved to be the winning combination in the second game. Lighting Dimensions was led in the third game by Rick Ferrante and Pat Komar with J.T. Builders getting a fine effort from John Thomas. Lighting Dimensions completed its sweep in the final game as it got a great effort from Lorraine Holt. WASHINGTON Street Gallery clinched a spot in the playoffs with a fourgame sweep of the U.S. 6"'"v — — — — — —
Coast Guard by scores of 15-8, 15-4, 15-4 and 15-12. The defense of Don Shiffledecker in addition to the excellent sets of Marlene Mediuch helped provide the winning edge in the first game. In the second game, the spikes of Joe Halasz and Tom Eckel led the offense for Washington Street Gallery. The clinics will be held daily 12-3 p.m. in the air conditioned Avalon Community Hall. August 5-9 is for boys 9-18. August 12-16 is for girls 9-18. A typical day at campe includes: strength and agility exercises, station drills, guest speakers (coaches, all star college and high school players).
