Assembly OKs Funds For Jails VJ TRENTON - The Assembly has approved the spending of $18 million this year to meet additional needs in handling the state's prisoners, said the sponsor of the measure, Assemblyman Joseph Chinnici, R-Cape May, Cumberland. More than half of the funds — $9.7 million — would be paid to counties to handle a projected increase in the number of state inmates housed in county facilities. The Department of Corrections estimates for the current fiscal year indicate that there will be an average of 1,370 inmates incarcerated in county facilities for which the state has responsibility, Chinnici said. THE SUPPLEMENTAL appropriation called for in the bill is necessary to offset the cost of the addi- ' tional inmates, said Chinnici. Another large portion of funds in the Chinnici bill — $6.9 million — would finance the operational costs of nearly 500 new beds at the Southern State Correctional Facility, Leesburg State Prison and Rahway State Prison. "As we get tough on criminals, we have to make sure we have places to put them when they are cap- - tured and convicted," said Chinnici. THE BILL would also pay $1.2 million for staffing and equipme/it at the Camden Correctional Facility, which is opening this August, Chinnici explained. The Assembly approved the bill, A-3346, which was merged with an identical bill in the Senate, S-2614, by a vote of 64-0.
