Bridge Open , But Don't Fly Across

By JOE ZELNIK STONE HARBOR - First the good news. The Great Channel (96th Street) bridge is open. Now the bad news. It's for motor vehicles only ; no bicycles or pedestrians. And Stone Harbor and Middle Township police have been asked to "starting shooting radar" because already drivers are » speeding across. "As soon as the first 20 came across, the next 20 came too fast," said John McCarthy area traffic engineer with the state Department of Transportation (POT). "1 know it's a brand new bridge, but that doesn't mean you can fly across. I called both police departments and reported quite a few complaints, especially from the workers. That's something I'm really concerned about." Actually, it's not a brand new bridge. It's the same old motors lifting the drawbridge, and that was the main reason the announced 3 p.m. Saturday opening was postponed to 6:17. "We had to put weight at the toe and heel and balance." said Bob Hovick. DOT resident engineer on the job. BALANCE ALSO is the reasoryihe sidewalks were not placed on the drawbridge. "WitVthose old, existing motors, we didn't want the added windvload." said Hovick. "No Trespassing' signs currently are warning off pedestrians Those will be replaced by "No Pedestrians" signs. That work will be finished in October and November Hovick said. Right now, the job is 93 percent complete Contractor Raymond In ternational Builders Inc. will have another month's work at the site, then leave until October. Hovick. who will stay right through it all said the temporary hookup undoubtedly will push the cost over the contracted $4 million. SWEATING OCT the job from the beginning, and putting in a 15-hour day last Saturday. Hovick got a tiny bit of extra pleasure when the bridge finally opened. Wife Nancy was the first to cross it. Mrs. Hovick had come by about 6 to tell him they were invited out to dinner , at 7. "I told her I couldn't come " he said, "But I told her it should be opening

soon and she pulled up to the gate." The eastbound Mrs. Hovick simply drove across to Stone Harbor, turned around and headed back to South Dennis, Hovick said. "He said he's working on charge orders which will probably release Raymond from most of the 52,500-a-day penalty that started on April 19, the scheduled completion day. McCarthy said- the speed problem is because the limit is 25 mph on the Stone Harbor (east) side, and 50 mph on the Middle Township (west) side. "We're looking to make it 25 on the east side, 30 on the bridge, 40 on the west side for i distance of maybe a quarter-mile and then 50," said McCarthy. Motorists who had

believed the announced 3 p.m. Saturday opening kept driving up, getting in line, waiting, and leaving in exasperation. Some were there not because they wanted to go someplace, but because they wanted to savor the thrill of the experience, like mountain-climbing. When the bridge was opened, two Stone Harbor police cars with lights blinking and sirens blowing made the crossings. Children cheered. Only hours after the bridge opened, ending a 10-month, 10-mile detour, some drivers were already complaining about fiveminute delays while the bridge was raised to permit boats to pas^ through. But to most, the clang, clang, clang, clang was music to the ears.

Even the most severe, disabling back problems normally start with a comparatively-, simple misalignment of Hi single vertebra. It is the resultant distortion of normal vertebrae and related muscles that builds up to real trouble, weeks or months later. Chiropractic spinal examinations. X-ray and other diagnostic techniques reveal even minute

spinal distortions. Corrective chiropractic adjustments can make the corrections that avoid the otherwise inevitable backaches. Chiropractic may be the answer for YOUR "back trouble". « Dr. Joseph Rizzo - Chiropractor -
