A mental exercise: What do Peter Abelard; Bud Abbot; Alexander the Great; Alice Cooper; Amenhotep IV; Marion Anderson; Jean Anouilh; Saint Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury 1033-1109; Aristophanes; Benedict Arnold; Fred Astaire; Attila and W.H. Auden have in common? The sharper readers will realize that the above names do not share the same historical periods, national origins, philosophies, or life styles but they do have something in common — their names all begin witl^he letter A. That clue will help with exercise two: What relationship do Absecon, N.J.; Acapulco, Mexico; Afghanistan; Alabaman the Amazon River, the Antarctic; the Appalachian Region, Argentina, Astoria, Oregon, Australia and the Azores have with the list of famous individuals above? HINT: W.H. AUDEN and Amenhotep IV never visited or originatd in any of these places. The cleverer readers ( I understand that readers of the Herald are clever by .4 of a mile) may have noticed that this list also begins with the letter A and is in alphabetical order. But their relationship? The last hint would include: Abortion; the Academy Awards, the Abominable Snowman, Acid Rain; Aerobic Dane--ing; Affirmative Action Programs; Alchemy; Alzheimers' Disease; Amusement Parks; Apocryphal books; aphrodisiacs, Apportionment (Election Law); Atheism; Astral Projection and Aztecs. Now, where would you find all of these interesting topics in one place? BEFORE CONFIRMING the answer astute readers have surely formulated, I'll give the rest of you four giveaway hints (pay attention to the form): Anschluss movement, 1918-38; Antenuptial Contracts - U.S. ; Animals, Treatment of - Law and Legilsation - U.S., and Atlases. If this list sounds like something you would find in a library, you're warm. If you guessed all of the above people, places and topics are found in a file — a card catalog — you are hot. If you guessed they are all found in the subject card catalog, you get an A + . While compiling my little quiz, I leafed through eight drawers of cards that hold the subject index to the books found in the Cape May County Library. Some
of the subjects sounded so interesting that I wound up lugging home books on Art, i Buddist, applejack (I'd love to try making some). King Arthur (found under Arthur, King — I'm an incurable romantic ^ medievalist) and three books about Iring Authors. SOME SUBJECT headings are archaic —
Atomic weapons instead of the^ 'current Nuclear Wehpons, Automata, a leftover from the 50's cover the current scene in Robotics, but Assertiveness and Apabolic steroids are headings using the current language apy Some topics which sounded so ordinary, like the
"alphabet", included books on its origins, the history of writing, calligraphy styles, - patterns for embroidery, needlework and monograms, print fonts of many styles and 100 Nineteenth Century Rhyming Alphabets in English. So mosey on over and check out a book on allergies or amber carvings.
