Cape May Readies For Long Season
CAPE MAY - This "historic" and picturesque city is preparing for what it hopes will be an interesting and successful season, which may span eight months - Maf through December. The most intensified , period, which will have the most financial impact, is 1 June through September, i as in the case throughout the Southern Shore Region. The city has again planned a variety of recreational activities. Convention Hall programs, special events and bandstand concerts within a modest budget to provide entertainment for the residents and tourists of Cape May alike during the spring, summer and fall. CITY PROGRAMS combined with those activities, events and services offered by the Greater Cape May Chamber of Commerce and the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts tend to cover the many interests and needs of people attracted to Cape May for vacations or permanent residence. From its Victorian heritage, which includes over 600 authentic Victorian structures for which the entire city was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976, to its beautiful beaches and great fishing. Cape May tries to offer a little something for everyone. In June for the benefit of participants and spectators alike, the 5th Annual Great Cape May Footrace (June 1), the 3rd Annual Cape May Triathlon (June 15), the 17th Annual Senior Citizens' Arts and Crafts Show (June 7 and 8). the 5th Annual Cape May Classic Hobie Cat Regatta ( June 22 and 23) and the Ed Miller Memorial Softball . Tournament (June 22 and 23) will entertain thousands. JULY WILL offer the 7th Annual Kiwanis Pancake Day in Convention Hall (July 6), the Fireworks Extravaganza (July 4). the 21st Annual Promenade Art Show (July 12. 13 and 14), the Jersey Cape Anti- | que Auto Show (July 13). the 4th Annual Lifeguard Superathlon (July 17) and the 10th Annual Decoy and Woodcarving Show ( July 25 and 27). In August, Cape May will bustle with such attractions as the 53rd Annual Queen Maysea Coronation -(Aug. 7). the 53rd Annual Baby Parade (Aug. 9). the 8th Annual Promenade Craft Show ( Aug. 17 and 18) and the Miss Cape May I Beach Patrol Pageant (Aug. 23). L SEPTEMBER through Vtiecember not only pro- . vides some of the most pleasant weather and best fishing, but also includes the Harrowgate String Band Concert to benefit the Cape May Rescue Squad (Sept. 1), the 3rd AnnualSeafood Festival (Sept. 6, 7 and 8), Captain Cornelius , Mey Founders Day (Sept. 28), Victorian Week (Oct. 1 1 20 ) , the Annual Christmas Parade (Dec. 7), the Christmas Candlelight House Tour (Dec/28) and the Annual Chrfttmas Ball (Dec. 7) and Community Tree- .. Lighting Ceremony (Dec. 8).
During the summer months Convention Hall will be a hub of activity from June 28 through Sept. 2 with free entertainment offered every evening. MONDAYS WILL be consumed by the all-day Menei Antique Show and Sale 10 a.m. - 10 p.m ., Tuesdays will offer the upbeat Boardwalk Revue staged by the Joanne Reagan Dahcers, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays are dedicated to dancing for children (8:30 - 9 p.m.) and then adults (9 - 11 p.m.) featuring the Al Raymond Orchestra on weekends and the Hal Davis Orchestra on Wednesdays. Thursdays jump with the weekly Teen Dance and Sunday provides vesper services (7 to 8 p.m.) and I the weekly Concert Series (9- 10:30 p.m.). This free concert series ] will be spiced by the appearance of Sal Barbo (June 30 and August 25), | Larry Ferrari (July 21), Philadelphia's Harrowgate String Band (Sept. 2) to benefit the Cape: May Rescue Squad, the; 276th Army Band (Aug. 11) and the Serenader Orchestra (Aug. 18). IN ADDITION eighteen band concerts will be conducted at the Rotary Bandstand. Band Concerts Coordinator Arthur Doran hasA scheduled such quality con-W tingents as the H.B. Cornet Band, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, the Air Force Band of the East, the Wheaton Brass Band and the Barrington Band.
