Computer System Cuts Energy Cost

COURT HOtJSE - Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital has recently completed installation of a computerized energy management system that combines the advantages of a consistently comfortable environment and the most efficient use of resources. The sophisticated MCC Powers GOO System now monitors temperatures, pressures and humidity at 250 different points within the air handling equipment of the building. If findings vary from the established norms, engineers are immediately alerted to the problem and its exact location. With this

inforfhation, they can correct most difficulties before there is any disruption in service. ENERGY USAGE is programmed to cycle in automatically the most efficient manner to maintain the desired comfort levels. It is also set to minimize the peak usage that determines charges for electricity. N "Heat recovery is another feature of the system," according to Lee Covenko, Director of plant operations, "and here again the computer helps us do it better. Temperatures of outdoor and return air are tracked and adjustments are made automatically for the best choice for usage in heating and cooling. Air that has already been heated or cooled is reused whenever possible." REGULAR PRINTOUTS that provide information on hourly or daily usage are another benefit of the system. Future modifications will allow telephone monitoring. Engineers will be able to c%U in from an outside location and get status reports on the en vironment at the hospital and possible satellite locations such as the BTMH alcoholism treatment center soon to be housed in the Crest Haven complex. Reports William H. Waldron III, BTMH president, "This technically advanced energy management system is flexible enough to meet our needs for years to come. It will conserve electricity, gas and oil, and produce savings of approximately $100,000 a year."
