Watchers Find 223 Bird Species in N.J.
CAPE MAY - The Delaware Valley Ornithological Club from Philadelphia won the top prize, the Urner-Stone Cup, in the Worlds Series of Birding last Saturday by sighting 182 different species of birds.
The Ed Stearns Award given to the out-of-state team spotting the most birds went to the National Geographic Society whose members reported seeing 163 species. Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology also reported spotting 163 species. But the geographic society took the prize by having it, results in at 9 p.m., an hour earlier than the birders from Cornell. The mpst unusual bird spotted.'in the day-long, statewide competition sponsored by New Jersey Audubon, society was a Mississippi Kite spotted by members of I^ie National Aware Bird Alert team from North Carolina Teams taking part in the search for birds throughout the state located a total of 223 different species compared to 247 last year Rene Kochenberger. a naturalist with the Cape May Bird Observatory in
Cape May Point, said teams of watchers who tried to find birds in Northern New Jersey were hampered by heavy rain.
