' Gleaning ' Program I Provides Veggies

RIO GRANDE - Senior citizens and the disadvantaged in Cape May County are getting their vegetables, thanks to Cape Human Resources, Inc.. which has been participating in Green Thumb's "Gleaning" Program. Leader in the program is Vera Smith, social worker The gleaning program, in existence since June. 1983. involves volunteers in South Jersey who go to farms and "glean" surplus vegetables * after the fields have been harvested commercially. The produce is then distributed to older gnd needy persons. \ IN THIS county, the gleaning program has become an important community effort. Each Monday and Tuesday, Smith and her group of volunteers go to several farms in Richland. Cumberland County, bringing back a rich harvest of

spinach, radishes, sweet I potatoes, broccoli, rabb, turnpip greens, lettuce, cabbage. tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, peppers, eggplant, corn, and squash. They glean from April until late Fall, providing fresh vegetables for county residents in Cape May, Wildwood, West Cape May. North Cape May, Villas, Del Haven, Rio Grande. Cape I May Court House.
