Luncheon Honors Boys State

COURT HOUSE - Eleven Cape May County high schools students were honored at the annual Boys State Lunclreon and indoctrination at the County Vocation-Technical Institute at Crest Haven. The Boys State program is sponosred annually by the Department of New Jersey American Legion in cooperation with high schools throughout the state. It is a "learn by doing" program designed to familiarize students with the workings of government. Each year, eligible students are selected from the county's high schools on the basis of leadership, character, scholarship, patriotism and service. Delegates and alternates attend a week-long program at Ryder College in Lawrenceville, in mid-June each year. THE CAPE COUNTY freeholders annually participates in the program by sponsoring the indoctrination luncheon. Freeholder James Kilpatrick, director of the Courts. Public Safety and Education, addressed the high school youths and legion delegates at the luncheon meeting at the Vocational Center. Richard Longstreet, of the Department of Public Affairs assisted in the program planning and made arrangements for the students and the members of the Cape May County American Legion posts who attended to visit offices in the county government complex. GUEST SPEAKER at the luncheon was Kenneth Groome, of Pleasantville, Sgt. Harold Hendricks of the Ocean City Police Department, representing Ocean City Post 137, led a delegation from Ocean City High School. Participating students included James Milligan, John Beloin, John Gilbert and James Beutell, all of Ocean City. Tuckahoe coordinator was Ted Behr, of Woodbine. Attending as a representative of Tuckahoe American Legion Post 239 was Craig Swennes, of Ocean City High School. He resides in Woodbine. Jean Berger, of jCaptf" May American Legion Post 193, Cape May, led the Lower Cape May Regional contingent. Included were Michael Huggins of Cape May and Daniel MacElrevey of Cape May and alternate Todd Lasky of North Cape May. FRANK TURSE of North Wildwood, representing Post 184, Wildwood, presented Laurence Murphy of North Wildwood and Robert C. Patterson Jr. of Wildwood Crest as post delegates. Archer Cornell of Post 198. Court House, introduced delegate Matthew McGuire, of Court House, as the representative from Middle Township High School. Also in attendance were Lester Dilts, adjutant, and Jr. Vice Commander Paul Martin, • representing the Cape May County American Legion Executive Committee.
