Strawberry Beds Need Renovation It's ofter. easy to forget about your June bearing strawberry plants after they've born their luscious crop in the spring However. Larry' Newbold. Cape May ■ County Agricultural Agent, said that these plants need to be renovated just after harvest if they are to bear well the next season Renovation is done to invigorate and rejuvenate the bed. Leaves should be mowed or clipped off without damaging the crowns. Rows should then be narrowed to a width of 18 to 20 inches, and plants within the bed thinned so that the remaining plants are about six inches apart. ' APPLY ABOUT two pounds of 5-10-10 fertilizer per 100 square feet. Be sure to brush the fertilizer off the leaves; do not apply fertilizer when the foliage is wet. This fertilizer application should be reapplied in mid-August. Throughout the summer, keep the plant beds free of/ weeds and pests. LAVELLETTE — State Senate Majority Leader and gubernatorial candidate John F. Russo has pledged to work to move legislation that would help solve problems related to ocean pollution. "If it's, a question of jobs or health, there's no question — health comeS first," Russo said. RusM.^who sponsored a measure mandating a monthly testing of the effluent being dumped into the ocean was keynote speaker at a "Save Our Ocean" rally here. RUSSO TOLD the several hundred people attending that only by bringing attention to the problem will government act. Russo said based on a recommendation he also introduced a proposal requ^rtfcgVthat known polluters would lose any tax exemptrstatus. He al«> noted that based on his recommendation, the oil spill bill — the first and what is considered the toughest in the country —
which taxes industry for the cleanup of toxic waste, is currently being upgraded. "We're presently expanding the bill to quadruple the assessment against all companies, Ciba-Geigy included. so that when there is pollution, the cost for cleaning it up will be paid by industry, not taxpayers, regardless of whether the state enforces action or not," said Russo. "The bottom line is, we're going to stay out in front of this issue. But, we're going to do it in a responsible way, to make sure firms like Ciba-Geigy live up to imposed regulations and provide necessary information to the proper authorities. Firms should not be needlessly harassed. But this environment must be protected," he continued. Russo noted that as lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore, he enjoys swimming in the ocean and vowed to keep it clean no matter what the cost.
