Memorial Plea: Back Star Wars I
By LURETTA DRAM IS It has been almost what seems a lifetime to me, but the calendar says it has been only a year since we received word from the Defense Department that w our son, L/Cpl. George L. Dramis fell in the service of his country in Beirut, Lebanon. Just a year ago, I appeared before you on Memorial Day as a newGold Star Mother. George was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps. He loved his country and his branch of service was doing all it could to improve his status as a member of the Armed Forces. He wrote and talked of the new equipment that was coming his way which would make his job easier and safer. He was happy with those members of Congress who supported the military appropriations bills because he knew it meant more and better equipment as it befitted a nation as great as our own. GEORGE HAD nothing but scorn and anger for those who for some flight of fancy or misbegotten idea of economy would risk the lives of American fighting men or risk the safety and security of their own country. He often said what a phony idea it was to sacrifice our armed forces for social programs. How long would we have the social programs if we fell to our enemies? Their social programs begin with scarcity and end up in concentration camps in Gulag. I can only second his opinions and bring them before you at this time. I wish it were he talking to you. My son and those we honor today by sacrifice of their lives in pursuit of the American Dream have indebted us to support all efforts to better equip and arm our military forces, all branches of the service! WE NEED TO encourage our elected representatives to support our president on the Star Wars Defense. Once before there was an attempt to develop a defensive system. It was bargained away at a treaty session and we were left defenseless. Now. it is freely admitted that the Soviet Union has gone ahead with it so that the average Russian has some defense in his homeland. We have NONE! We are now about to embark on a defense system, one that will knock down in-\ tercontinenlal ballistic missiles before they reach us. This is not an offensive weapon, but one which may save the lives of yourself, your children, and our beloved country! ONCE AGAIN, the wolves are in full cry! Cancel it! Save the money! It won't work using it as a bargaining chip in the current treaty talks... Do anything but go ahead and produce it! Let the jog your run to your library 1
American people, their families and their country be hostage, open to nuclear blackmail! 4 They don't tell you that the Soviet Union is working feverishly to develop the same thing and working just as hard to stop us from building our own. After all. if we develop a defense, what good will their present costly superior
numbers of ballistic missiles do them! FOR YOUR OWN survival, write your Congressmen to support the Star Wars System! If we succeed, future generations of free Americans will be able to stand here in the Memorial Days of the future and say to all those men from the Revolution through all our wars:
"Thank you, thank you I for your sacrifice. We too J have kept the faith, and ' your fellow Americans are free and secure because of all of us together. " Ed. Note: Mrs. Dramis . presented this speech at I the Memorial Day services Monday at the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery. Court House.
