Tri-Fed Council Backs Triathlon

CAPE MAV - Verne Scott, executive director of Tri-Fed/USA has announced the decision of ithe TriFed Council to sanction the City of Cape May Triathlon as part of the 1985 Tri-Fed Series, and to award a regional championship status to the race. Phil Rogers, race director said, "affiliation with TRI-FED is an important step in making CMT the premier stage race in the East The designation as the Eastern Regional Stage Championship is recognition of the prior work done in Cape May and reflects well on Tri-Fed's own growth." THE 1985 Triathlon is endorsed by the N.J. Division of Travel and Tourism and is scheduled for Saturday, June 15. with a 9 a.m. start for the swim. CMT has several distinctive features, the most obvious is the "Stage" format, which has mandatory rest periods and full field starts for each leg. CMT also uses looped courses so that the spectators get to see the racers pass through the city several times. Distances for the 1985 races are: Select Flite — 1 mile swim. 10 mile run. 50 mile bike Ladies-Only Flite — 1 mile swim. 5 mile run. 20 mile bike.

THIS YEAR'S race has received a matching grant of $1,950 from the State of New Jersey's Division of Travel and Tourism and has been selected as the Eastern Regional LongCourse Championship. The field for the triathlon has been expanded to 300 and volunteers will be a key ingredient. Anyone interested in volunteering for all or part of June 15 will receive an official triathlon T-shirt. Returning and first-time volunteers are asked to contact the Department of Civic Affairs at 884-8411, ext. 20 or 27. Beach Patrol Tests WILDWOOD - The city is holding tryouts for the Wildwood Beach Patrol Saturday. Anyone 14 years old or older is invited to participate. and should come to the beach at Lincoln Avenue at 9 a m The captain of the beach patrol. John McCann, and his lieutenants are organizing the event and will be handling the testing. The tryout test consists of two parts: a. swimming twenty laps in a 24-meter swimming pool; b. completing a one-mile run on the boardwalk within the six minute and thirty second time allotment. Once these tests are successfully completed, the candidate will be invited to the lifeguard rookie school. This schooling lasts for about seven or eight days in June ' Here, candidates learn all aspects of oceansaving techniques, rip tides, surf bashes^ water flow, boat handling, back-up systems. The four top graduates are: first. Mark Iaconoand his Cockapoo Trooper; second. Mike Doyle and his mixed breed Casy; third Joe Wright and his Cheasapeake Stormy; /ourth. Sam Repici and his Lab-mix Sandy The most improved dog in class was Dusty, a Golden Retriever owned by John Siciliano. June Dulinski received her C.D. on her Cocker Spaniel, Champion Bayshore's Court Jester. The next beginners' class will be the fall, at Cape May Convention Hall.
