County Agricultural Agent, now is a good time to control birch leafminers and prevent injury to your birch trees The birch leafminer is a common insect pest of several varieties of birch trees, including grify, paper, and European white birches Extensive injury by leafminers will weaken trees and encourage attack by bronze birch borers, which in turn can kill trees ADl'LT BIRCH leaf miners are small, onesixteenth of an inch, black sawflies. resembling tiny black flies. They can be observed on leaf surfaces during early to mid-May. Adult females deposit their eggs in newly formed leaves. These eggs hatch into tiny worm like larvae that tunnel between leaf surfaces. At first the larvae make only small blotches; then infested leaves turn brown and die. There are several generations each year, but the first two are the most injurious to birch leaves. Therefore, control measures should be applied in mid-May and repeated in late June. Labeled insecticides include acephate (Orthenei. carbaryl (Sevin), phosmet • (Imidan). When mines show, use dimethoate (Cygon or DeFend) or metasvstox-R
