Spruce Mites Are Threat This Year

COURT HOUSE - According to Larry Newbold. Cape May County Agricultural Agent, now is the time to inspect spruce and hemlock trees for mites. If your spruce and hemlock trees or arborvitae and juniper plants appear to be bleached out, carefully inspect them for spruce mites. These tiny creatures have been very active this spring throughout much of New Jersey. Some clues that may help you uncover a spruce mite problem include discoloration of needles, presence of fine webbing around needles, mite's eggs and the actual mites on needles and branch tips. Generally, spruce needles turn grayish, hemlock needles turn white near the base of the needles, arborvitae brown and juniper yellow. TO CHECK FOR mites take a piece of paper and

hold it beneath a branch tip. Shake the branch and give it a firm hit with your hand. Some of the tiny mites will drop into the paper and be easier to spot there than on the tree. A 10-power handlens will generally help to reveal small, reddish mites eggs on or near the base of the needles. Usually, injury begins on the lower, inner portions of trees and plants and proceeds upwardand outward. There may be four or five generations each year The majority of spruce mite feeding occurs during May and Septmeber. Therefore, inspect your trees during these major activity periods and if mites are present, or if needles are starting to discolor, apply on the following insecticides; acephate (Orthene), chlorpyrifos (Dursban), Meta-systox-R, dimethoate (Cygon or DeFend) , or dicofol (Kelthane).
