When Fruit Trees Fail to Produce
When a fruit tree on the home grounds fails to bear or produces only a scanty crop, there are several possible causes to consider, says Larry Newbold. Cape May County Agricultural Agent, who outlines these reasons : After being planted, a fruit tree takes from three to six years to begin to produce fruit. In apples, both the rootstock selected and the variety determine when the tree will fruit. In general, dwarfing rootstocks come into bearing earlier than standard or more vigorous rootstocks. and trees that grow at a moderate rate generally produce fruit sooner than those that groweither too vigorously or too slowly. In apples, spur-type varieties produce fruit earlier than standard or terminal bearing varieties. IT IS IMPORTANT to keep the tree as insect and disease-free as possible. Insects and diseases can usually be controlled with the regular application of "All-purpose fruit sprays", which are mixtures of fungicides and insecticides that are effective against most fruit tree pests. When fruit trees are not sprayed properly or left untreated, diseases and insects can reduce fruit size and quality, although the tree will usually continue to bear fruit. Home Fruit Spray Schedules are available from your County Cooperative Extension Service Fruit trees need a certain amount of cold weather to end their dormancy and to promote spring growth When winter temperatures are too mild, spring growth is delayed, irregular and slow Extreme cold during the winter can kill fruit buds, however, and as fruit buds expand and grow, they become even moresusceptible to injury from cold temperatures IF A HEAVY frost is ex peeled when trees are about to bloom, covering them can minimize bud or blossom injury, provided temperautres do not fall too low and the cold weather is of short duration. All fruit trees need to be pollinated Without sufficient pollination the tree may blossom profusely, but will not produce fruit. Fruit trees that can pollinate themselves — known as self-fruitful — in elude quince, sour cherry, apricots, peaches and European plums.

e Self-unfruitful types inr elude most apple, pear, y sweet cherry. Japanese il and American plum; for pollination, plant two or e more of these varieties I near each other, e SOMETIMES fruit trees, such as apple, bear heavily i one year and sparsely the i next. This is called "biennial bearing." Fruit buds i are developed during the I summer for the following f year's crop. A heavy crop one year may prevent ade- ; quate fruit bud development for the next year. I Biennial bearing is difficult to correct, but early and heavy flower thinning, during the year the trees produce a large number of flowers, can help. ' Inadequate sunlight delays the onset of flower production and can reduce the amount of fruit. This is why older, large trees tend to produce fruit on their periphery and nothing in the center. Avoid placing fruit trees where they will be shaded, and prune young trees to develop a strong frame work and horizontal branches. Upright growth tends to be vegetative and produces few flowers. Excessive fertilizer can also delay the onset of flowering by stimulating vegetative, upright growth.
