Bill Aimed To Assist Survivors
TRENTON — Assemblyman Joseph W. Chinnici has. introduced a bill that would ensure that a surviving spouse has immediate access to jointlyheld assets when a husband or wife dies. "The life of a surviving spouse is made more difficult when access to cash and securities is restricted by law, particularly when either spouse had free access to the assets when both were living," said Chinnici, R-Cape May, Cumberland. "Now that the state has eliminated the inheritance tax, ihjs bill is the next
logical step," Chinnici said. "UNDER CURRENT statues, a surviving spouse is given access to some assets through a waiver granted by the state Director of the Division of Taxation," Chinnici explained. "But there is a delay while the surviving spouse applies for and then receives approval for the waiver. "It is tough enough to lose a loved on without having to put up with state statutes that restrict access to assets," Chinnici said. "This bill would preveht that situation from , occurring."
