Advice At Hurricane Time
COURT HOUSE - With the hurricane season under way (it officially began Saturday, June 1) and scheduled to run through Nov. 30, the county Office of Emergency Management has a few words of advice for Cape May residents and visitors. Advice given by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), gives these main points: IF A HURRICANE threatens — Keep listening to your local radio or television station for the latest Weather Service advisories and for special instructions from local government officials. A Hurricane Watch means that a hurricane may threaten an area within 36 to 48 hours. A Hurricane Warning means that a hurricane is expected to strike an area within 24 hours. Evacuation — If your local government advises evacuation,' do so immediately. Evacuation is always an option, but it is a life-saving means of protecting yourself and your family. BE FAMILIAR with your community's evacuation routes to safe areas. Fill your car's fuel tank in case , evacuation should be necessary; service stations may be inoperable after a storm because of flooding or power interruption. Turn ofLgas and electricity before leaving. Who should evacuate? Residents of low-lying areas that may be swept by high tides or storm waves should evacuate such areas without delay. It would be dangerous to be caught in your car on an open coastal road which could already be flooded before the full force of the hurricane strikes. GETTING OUT could also be complicated by the fact that density of population in some areas would make it I impossible to handle all the i vehicles within a limited time. When to stay home. If you live inland, away from beaches and low-lying coastal areas, your home is o well-constructed and local \ authorities have not called for evacuation in your area, stay home and make emergency preparations Owners of mobile homes should have tiedowns. Boat owners should moor their boats securely before the storm arrives, giving them plenty of slack. Do not return once wind and waves start. Small boats should be trailered to safe locations. And, when you stay home, making the following; EMERGENCY preparations — Keep batterypowered equipment such as radios and flashlights in operating condition, in case of power failure. Store a supply of drinking water in clean containers, because normal water supplies may be contaminated or damaged by the storm. Board up windows or protect them with storm shutters or tape. Small windows may be damaged by debris and larger ones by wind pressure. While tape may not prevent window breakage. it is a way of preventing flying glass. Secure outdoor objects that may be blown away. ! When the storm arrives — stay in your house until you
have been advised the storm has passed. Again, keep tuned to local radio or television. AFTER THE storm has passed — If you are in a public shelter, remain there until advised by local officials that it is safe to return home. Keep tuned to local radio for advice and information about emergency medical, food and other forms of assistance. Do not drive unless you must. Debris-filled streets are dangerous and roads should be cleared for emergency vehicles — you might interfere with rescue and recovery work. And the road may be undermined and collapse under a car. Avoid loose and dangling wires, and report such damage to police ortitility company. Should a live wire fall on your car while drwv ing, stay inside and wait for aid. IF YOUR HOME is flood ed or damaged, it must be inspected by public health officials and building inspector before you may reenter. Gas and electricity may be turned on only after
inspection and then by an employee or agent of the utility. In conclusion, it was pointed out that tornadoes are often spawned by hurricanes. When listening to weather bulletins, also be alert to tornado watches or warnings. Should you receive a tornado warning, seek inside shelter immediately, preferably below ground level. Additional information on hurricane preparedness is available at the County Office of Emergency Management, located in the Library-Office Building, Court Hou4£. Earns Her B.A. COURT HOUSE - Marianna Elizabeth Rixey, daughter of local residents Mr. end Mrs. Joseph W. Rixey Jr., recently was graduated from Mary Washington College.
