During the last decade the ■J relationship between diet and digestive disorders has been undergoing a revolution. It turns out that many of the dietary recommendations we physicians were taught in medical school had never been scientifically proved. Diet treatments were handed down by word of mouth for generations with almost no one questioning their accuracy. TwQp major treatments have turned out to be major myths. True or false, drinking milk helps heal an ulcer. Would you believe the accurate, proven answer is false? IT TURNS OUT that you may feel relief as the milk hits your ulcer and splashes off the digestive acids which were etching it deeper, However, as a result of this food, which is high in calcium, the body then produces even more digestive acids to break down the milk into usable nutrition. The result : More acid pouring onto that painful ulcer. I find it extremely difficult to convince people of this new fact. LAST MONTH another major diet treatment bit the dust True or false, eating
fats makes your gallbladder problem worse? I feel like Ripley, but believe it or not, eating fat has been proved to have no effect whatsoever on the ability of your gallbladder to function. It is also interesting to note that 20 million Americans are estimated to have gallstones, yet very few actually experience discomfort from them. The same study has shown that people who tend to form gallbladder stones also have gallbladders which are less likely to contract. THIS MEANS that although they have stones, they also have a decreased likelihood that the stones will ever be forced into the biliary tract, which is the area where pain usually kicks up. Are there substitute dietary recommendations for the gallbladder, you ask? At Penn, where I took my training as a digestive disease specialist, they used to say: "Don't eat it, if it eats you." In other words, if a food . disagrees with you or intensifies the pain you are experiencing, avoid or eliminate it from your diet. WHEN IT comes to ulcers our dietary goal is to keep acid off the affected areas as much as possible. Thus, avoiding coffee, tea, chocolate and cola will help Also, acidic juices probably won't feel terrific during the active stages of an ulcer, nor will spicy foods. Putting down a nice bed of rice, bread, or liquid antacid into your stomach before imbibing the forbidden foods may help buffer the pain. It is critical that you officially determine whether you do in fact have an ulcer or gallbladder problem. THE SYMPTOMS associated with these disorders can also represent cancer, heart disease and many other serious ailments. You can go along swigging antacids for months, even years, never realizing you are attempting to counteract the effects on a stomach ulcer turned to cancer. Free literature on digestive cancers is available by calling the American Cancer Society, 886-1154. Health Watch is a public education project of the Cape May county Unit of the American Cancer Society, of which Dr. Beitman is president-elect.
