Joint Police-CG Effort Rescues Two From Bay
VILLAS — A combined Lower Township policeCoast Guard operation saved two men from the bay yesterday morning after their^, 23-foot Pacemaker boat suddenly sank three miles off shore. Greg Goess, 30, of Gibbstown, and Harry Jenzano, 34, of Woodbury Heights, were treated for exposure at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital and released. They'd been in the water for more than six hours. Lower Patrolman Ed-
ward Donohue gave these details: The ship sank at about 7:30 p.m. with no time for the pair to radio for help. Jenzano put on a lifejacket and grabbed a seat cushion, but Goess was only able to get a seat cushion. He decided to swim for shore. Lower police were called to Woodland and the bay at 1:10 a.m. after reports of cries for help from the water. Donohue was assisted by patrolmen Joseph Marker and James Dietterich. They heard the cries and requested a Coast Guard helicopter from Group Cape May Rescue Station. The station sent a helicoper and a boat. The New Jersey State Marine Police also sent a boat. Goess swam ashore at Birch Avenue at 1 : 34, made his way to a home and police were summoned. They took an account of the ■ mishap and the Lower Rescue Squad took him to Burdette. 1 Jenzano, in the meani time, was drifting southward with the curI rent. Marker went into the water with his portable radio and kept voice coni tact with Jenzano, relaying his location to the Coast Guard helicopter. I The helicopter put out a flare at 2:15 a.m. and i sighted Jenzano at 2:33. 1 The patrol boat picked him : up and took him to the ferry terminal where the rescue
squad transported him to Burdette. Donohue said the water was "pretty calm" and 66 degrees, factors that assisted the victims. Both were covered with jelly fish stings, he said. , Donohue quoted Goess as saying he had had bad cramps, was vomiting and I "felt like giving up, but the thought of his four-year-old kid kept him going." Praising the Coast Guard, Donohue said the boat was manned by petty Officers Buto and Morron and seamen Shilkett and I Gulhaney. Lt. Kolb and EnI sign Kalita were pilot and i co-pilot, respectively, of the helicopter. Crowds of people lined the beach to watch the rescue operation, Donohue said.
