Dozen Old Houses On View June 30

CAPE MAY — A selfguided tour of 12 of this Victorian city's old buildings, five of which opened their doors to the public for the first time for the occasion, will be held 10 a.m. -4 p.m. Sunday, June 30. The tour is sponsored by the Cape May County Art League. For advance ticket sales or more information, call 884-8628. Tickets will also be on sale at the League. 1050 Washington St., and the information booth on the -Mall that weekend. ' Included on the tour are the following history-rich buildings: THE ALBERT H Hughes House, built in 1838, was the first house on Hughes Street on the Hughes Plantation. Albert Hughes bought the land in \ 1836 and later built the 1 house for his bride. The Cherry House, purI chased by Judge and Mrs. / Charles W. Kalp, was built / in 1849 by Lemuel Learning. This house has been named "The Cherry House" for the Charles Cherry family of Philadelphia, who lived there in 1923-1947. The artifacts date back to 1800, with most of them of the period 1835 to 1880. The Steiner Cottage, circa 1850, is one of a pair of "twins" said to have been built by a Southern planter for his daughter. Formerly there was a connection between the two houses on the second floor balconies. To-

day it is the residence of Fred and Alice Steer Wilson. r EPISCOPAL Church of » the Advent is a fine exam- | pie of "Carpenter's | Gothic". It was built for summer use from plans i drawn in 1865 by Henry I Sims, Philadelphia ar- [ chitect. It was acquired by the Advent church in the 1 1930's. . Holiday House of the i Girls' Friendly Society was , built after 1867 it was then the Biltmore Hotel. In 1911 it became the Holiday > House and was used as a , supervised vacation residence for the young girls of the society. , The Weber House, circa i 1870, was built on farmland . purchased from the heir of Isaac Hughes, Mumucan i Hughes, in 1845. He built i this summer home so that a y breezeway would be going through the middle and added many windows and doors to catch the cool summer breezes. Special , features are handcarved "gingerbread" and hooded ; gables on the rooftop. THE HOME of W. Gill I Brooks, circa 1905, stands on the original grounds and the structure is original but I a section was rebuilt after the 1962 storm. This house was previously owned by f John Thorton MacDonald i and sold to the Brooks Family in 1936. Dr. and Mrs. J. Roch's Home, circa 1909, original- ! ly was one of 21 identical houses. In 1916 the exterior was altered to express individuality. Possibly designed by Charles E. B Shermerhorn of 1 Philadelphia with red cedar shakes and sliding wooden doors. The Wagar House, circa 1922, a Dutch Colonial built by George Cummings, sits on the original grounds. An apartment was added during WWII as extra housing. A special feature is the wood clapboard siding. THE HOME of Mr. and Mrs. Miles Tourison, built in 1926, is just as it was then. The only renovation done to the house was in the kitchen. Mrs. Tourison's hobby is gardening and many beautiful and unusual plants fill her home. Cape May County Art League Carriage HouseGallery and the Physick Estate share the grounds on Washington Street. The carriage house was the first structure on the estate and was built in 1876. Its design was attributed to William Sidney, a Philadelphia architect. The interior paneling is of longleaf pine and all the hard- i ware is of solid brass and I wrought iron. Tie 16-room Physick . mansion was completed in I — 1881 and designed by Frank rurness. Evident in the structure are varied . silhouettes, multiplication | of gables, hooded dormer j windows and massive upside down chimneys. S*e Coupon For 50$ i Off 1 OaOmNalPag* |
