July Tournament For White Marlin
COURT HOUSE - Entries are being received in the 29th annual Cape May County White Marlin Tournament, which is scheduled for July 19-21. according to tournament chairman Phil Robeson of Cherry Hill, and Avalon. Robeson, who is chairman of the Jersey Cape Sportsfishing Tournament Committees, said the White Marlin Event features marlin conservation as its primary goal since it encourages releasing of marling rather than keeping the fish The tourmanent has been hailed as a release event almost since its inception. Tournament participants have engaged in marlin tagging and marlin releasing projects to assist in the study of marlin movement and to conserve the species, according to Robeson. THE EVENT kicks of with a registration dinner at the Yacht Club of Stone Harbor July 18. Fishing dates are July 19 and 20 with an alternate whether date set for July 21. A tournament awards dinner is scheduled for the Golden Eagle Inn, Cape May, Sunday, July 21. The tournament is open to individual boats over 24 feet in length as well as to teams
of up to four boats. Team and individual boat prizes are awarded for points accumulated for catching and/or releasing white marlin. Game fish awards are also presented for the biggest tuna, dolphin, blue marlin and wahoo. A minimum weight of 25 pounds has been set for eligible entries% the tuna division. The Cape Marlin Tournament is one of the oldest of its kind along the East Coast. It was established 30 years ago by a group of dedicated marlin fisherman who recognized that most of their contact was over the ship-to-shore radio or as they passed each other on boats while on the ocean fishing. THE TOURNAMENT sponsors created the event to promote the sport of marlin fishing, but they listed as their goals the promotion of good fellowship, dockside comeraderie and education into the fine points of catching these exotic game fish. The tournament has been held in high regard by sportsfishing enthusiasts. It was an early pioneer in tagging and research programs. Released marlin score 25 points for the successful angler while boated fish are scored at the point per pound in the marlin category. Since the emphasis was put on releasing marlin in early years of the tournament, most of the fish caught are returned to the water. Fish to be mounted as a trophy or the occasional fish which is too badly injured to survive make up the bulk of the few fisn which are retained. The tournament is sponsored annually by the Jersey Cape Sportfishing Tournament in cooperation with the County Board of chosen Freeholders. For information concerning the tournament, write the Department of Public . Affairs Box 365, Cape May Court House, N.J. 08210 or call 609-886-0901. I
