New Award Named For James Henry

Henry, who has been honored twice already this spring, has learned that the prestigious Maxwell Club of Philadelphia, of which he has been chairman of the board for eight years, has announced the creation of a Jim Henry Award to be presented annually to the area's outstanding high school football player. The award will be presented for the first time at > the annual awards banquet in February 1986. Included will be a $1,000 scholarship to the college or university of the athlete's choice, a silver bowl for the winner and a permanent bowl for the club that will bear f names of all the recipients. I WINNERS OF the Jim I Henry Award will be chosen 1 from among high school I gridders honored weekly at | luncheons of the club during 1 the fall season. Nominees ' will be evaluated for football accomplishments, academic achievements and performance as citizens in the school community. Club president Francis Bagnell said when announcing the award, "We have been honoring the college level's top performer with the Maxwell Award and the NFL's best with the Bert Bell Award and now it is most fitting that we recognize the future college and possible pro performers with the Jim Henry Award." ON MAY 9 Henry got the first of three honors when Freeholder Gerald Thornton named him Cape May County's Senior of the Year at the Senior Jamboree held in Avalon's Community Hall. The second came when he I was invited to the gubernatorial mansion, Drumthwacket, where Gov Thomas Kean awarded him the title of Senior for the State of New Jersey. Henry's career in sports is as prestigious as it is long. A Villanova graduate who received honorable mention on the Ail-American team, in '31 he became line coach at LaSalle College. He became head coach in '41 , and in '61 was president of the Eastern Intercollegiate Football Official's Association, officiating at many of the nation's top grid con-
tests for 25 years before retiring following the 1964 Army-Navy game. In '31, he coached LaSalle's Explorer basketball team to a 15-4 season. He started La Salle's crew, the first Catholic college crew in America. He was a founder of the Big Five, served as vice president of the Maxwell Club for 18 years, and was named chairman of the board in 1977. /
