Fleas and ticks are appearing on the skin of our dogs and cats quite frequently at this time of year. This week's column will address the problem of flea control, a subject of interest to just about every pet owner. Before we leap into the world of dips, powders, and bombs, it is necessary for you. as the pet owner, to understand that fleas (and ticks) will be with us every year and you cannot ever let them get a foothold in your household or on your pet. or else your method of flea control will be less than effective. TICKS ARE more of a phenomenon in the mainland communities, specifically areas where heavy brush or shrubbery are present. There are various sizes of the Brown Dog Tick, depending on the sex of the tick and its stage of life Ticks are most easily removed by hand: firmly grasp the tick as close to the pet's skin as possible with the thumb and forefinger Draw the tick away from the skin firmly and usually the entire tick will come free from your pet. If a portion of the tick's head remains visible in the skin, cleanse the area and leave it alone It will eventually heal without complication Consult with your veterinarian if there appears to be a problem Heavy infestation of your dog probably requires dipping to kill the ticks and have them drop off or be brushed out Never dip a cat before first reading the label to make sure of the dip's safety on cat skin TIIE FIRST rule of flea control is to routinely spray, bomb or exterminate your house if the pet enters the premises Fleas lay eggs in carpets, carpet mats, between walls, in floorboard . cracks, mattresses and other small darn, safe areas which you cannot see The black-brown flea dirt particles seen on your animal are not the eggs laid by those fleas but rather the fa's ces of the flea The particles are the flea's waste products after taking a blood meal from your pet A female flea will lay hun dreds of eggs in her life and I these will grow into adults in I vour house and eventually I hop onto your animal to

compete the flea life cycle. WHAT SHOULD be "used to spray around your house ' Any larvacidal darve-kill ing) insecticide will help your flea control program A major larvacidal insecticide on the market presently is Dursban. A pet owner should spray the carpels and under furniture frequently for better results Every two weeks is a good frequency at which to start. Vacuuming alone does Nothing to control fleas and is a lame attempt at limiting your household flea popUla-. tion. Flea "bombs" are aerosol canisters which put out a microfine mist all over the house. They can be a worthwhile adjunct to a frequent spraying program Bombs also are available with larvacidal ingredients and are quite effective if used diligently. An exterminator service may be helpful with setting up a monthly or bimonthly fogging program MOST SPRAYS and bombs for the house are available at your veterninarv office a feed/farm supplier. pet stores, or retail exterminator offices. The keyto their effectiveness is frequent use and knowledge of why and how to use these msecticidal preparations Always be sure to read the labelsi For your pet, the method of flea control depends on how the animal reacts to certain procedures If your guard dog is intractable and will not go near water, you will have big problems with digs and shampoos The typical cat will not like the sound of an aerosol spraycan SOME PET owners insist that fleas can be controlled through hand brushing and removal The hunt-and-peck method or use of a flea comb is not a good way to remove fleas from your pet You will miss most of the fleas and waste quite a bit of time in the process "Fifi" or "Boots will most likely pick up a new batch of fleas from the livingroom rug only minutes after a thorough hand grooming for fleas anyway. Cats are best powdered one or two times weekly with a good quality flea powder, such as one containing at least 5 percent C arharyl and possibly other active ingredients

SHAMPOOS AND dips usually are not easily used on cats. Trigger sprayers may be easier to use than aerosols on the felines. Once again a caution: Make sure the product can be used on cats. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you happen to make mistake. Any flea control for your cat must be used in conjunction with a control program around your house. ED NOTE: Next week, flea control for dogs and a few new products will be discussed.
