For the past year or so, I've been busy studying the music of New Orleans, trying to get a better grip on its impact on rock, but mostly because it's been fun to. hear the vintage rock, jazz soul, zydeco (cajun>. and rhythm and blues from the region Some of my personal favorites include The Neville . Brothers. James Hooker1. Dr John. Thtt Meters. Fats Domino, and Guitar Slim to mention only a few. AH of these per formers have albums available that can he ordered for better record stores, and, in future weeks. I hope ti) tie able to review some of them Tills TIMK. however. I'd like to mention a few things I picked up on Ace a few weeks hack. For those who don't know. Ace was probably the premier label for issuing sides by New Orleans rock and blues ar tists in the 50's/early fill's. Its roster of stars and the hits they produced will im press anyone who grew up , listening to top-40 AM radio a couple of decades hack American Ace is sadly no longer, but the company has resurfaced in Kngland ' and they've been cranking out some d y n a m i t e reissues that I wholeheartedly recommend Here are just a handful gems that have recently found a home on my turntable llury 'Piano' Smith began his career in the early 50's playing on sessions for Utile Kichard. Lloyd Price, and Smily I.ewis. Heavily influenced by local hereo Professor Longhair. Smith's style of piano playing was upbeat, rockin'. and. most of all. fun By the mid-AO's, he was fronting The Clowns and was cutting sides for Ace. some, sueh as "Kockin'

Pneumonia & The Boogie Woogie Flu," "High Blood Pressure,'" and "Don't You Just Know It," found hit status. Rochin' Pneumonia and The Boogie Woogie Flu and Somewhere There's Honey For the Grizzly Bear 'both Ace-Import i bring together hits, misses, and previously unreleased tunes to give a clear, concise picture of Smith's music. WITH STRONG musical support from pros like Lee Allen and Dr. John and Smith's melodic, yet rhythm-heavy piano playing. not to mention the goodtime lead vocals by Hobby Marchan. this music has aged extremely well Instead of listening to in sipid covers by the likes of Sha-Na-Na, check out the real thing. You won't be sorry. Ill KY SMITH and The Clowns had another hit. which they didn't get credit for They went into the studio and laid down the original version of "Sea Cruise." hut Johnny Vincent. owner of Ace. didn't think it was as good as it could be He brought in another vocalist to sing over the existing hacking tracks and Frankir Ford was an instant star with a top- 10 single. Ford's other hits. "Roberta." "Alimony." and "You Talk Too Much." didn't commercially surpass "Sea Cruise." but as Let's Take A Sea Cruise i Ace-Import I shows, he had the potential to be a huge start. Like the best of New Orleans rock and roll. Ford had a party sound that borrowed riffs from the blues and gave it a solid, danceable rhythm .UK ALSO has a five album series of compila-

tions that feature hits such as Jimmy Clanton's "Just A Dream" alongside singles like Morgus & The Three Ghouls' "Morgus the Magnificent" that are now hopelessly rare and fetch big bucks from collectors. These five albums, titled The Ace Story, are an excellent introduction to the rich rock and blues sounds, not to mention performers like Ford. Smith. Joe Tex. Kddie Bo. Karl King. Dr John. etc. of New Orleans. Bui remember, as good as Ace's roster was. it still only had a fraction of NewOrleans' talent. We'll discuss some other reissues in the future. Meanwhile, those who appreciate American roots music should rush off to their favorite record shop and order these platters.
