Tips on Choosing Duster, Sprayer
Before purchasing a sprayer or duster to control insect pests of vegetables and fruits in your home garden, decide which size and type serve your needs best Larry Newbold. county agricultural agent, makes this suggestion and reviews some of the available equipment Hand atomizers (flip-gun tpe> are inexpensive and simple to operate. This type of sprayer is designed for applying emulsifiable concentrations to small plantings Be sure the atomizer is made of noncorrosive materials that are easily cleaned. Wettable powder formulations of insecticides should not be used in these sprayers, as they tend to clog the nozzles Hand atomizers are not suitable for large vegetable plantings or fruit trees COMPRESSED air sprayers that hold from one to five gallons are useful for large home gardens The spray of emulsifiable concentrates or wettable powders is expelled by air pressure obtained by a built-in hand pump. Before you buy. make sure sprayer parts are easy to clean and that replacement parts will be available in succeeding years. Compressed air sprayers are best for backyard fruit trees. Dusters of the plunger type don't hold much, but are useful in small gardens They require less care than sprayers. Dusts should be applied early in the morning when plants are laden with dewRotary dusters with hand cranks are satisfactory for larger plantings and where coverage must be complete HOSE-ON-LAWN and garden sprayers are useful since they can be attached to any garden hose and us- j ed to apply fertilizers as j well as pesticides. Large j
areas can be covered with this type of applicator, although they are not as desirable for the vegetable garden as are the compressed air sprayers. Leaving insecticides in garden sprayers shortens the life of such equipment. Many of today's pesticides contain ingredients corrosive to metal parts, particularly galvanized iron reservoir tanks. Besides, many insecticides lose their potency when left overnight in water. For best results, mix only the amount of insecticide needed for the job at hand After spraying, drain excess insecticide in an area away from children, pets and wildlife. Flush the tank with water several times and force water through the spray wand and nozzle until it is crystal clear. Finally, to permit drying, suspend the tank upside down with the lid removed
