Cape Equestrienne Honored by ASPCA
GAPE MAY - Sixteen-year-old Elizabeth Elwell of this city was presented the 1984 Henry Bergh Horsemanship Trophy. This award is presented annually by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to the teenager who, in competitive horse shows, accumulates- the highest number of achievement points for the care, treatment, knowledge and the riding of her mount. Miss Elwell was presented the award at the annual Humane Awards Lunceon in the grand ballroom of the WaldorfAstoria Hotel, New York City. ) \ .
MISS ELWELL will be a junior at Lower Cape May Regional High School in the fall. She is the daughter of Captain and Mrs. Robert W. Elwell Jr of Cape May. Miss Elwell has been riding since she wa»6 years old in competitive horse shows where she rides English. Some of her more memorable moments have been when she rode at the Devon Horse Show and the Burdette Tomlin Memorial Horse Show under her former trainer Cynthia Hankins. Trophies and championships she has won were from Woodedge Stables in Moorestown,

Classes Set In Aerobics
CAPE MAY - The city will have aerobic classes as part of its summer recreaAfternoon Exercise CITY MAY - The city will offer two P.M. Exercise classes as part of its summer recreation schedule. The classes will be 5-6 p.m . taught by Minette Southard, and 6-7 p.m.. taught by Donna Muzurek. Both of these classes are designed for the beginner student and will be held Mondays and Wednesdays at the Cape May Elementary School. N.J.. and from the English Circuit of South Jersey. Miss Elwell's trophy is a large silver bowl with horse heads on either sides as handles. It sits on a wooden base with her name engraved on it. She also received a large championship ribbon and a $250 gift certificate from the Tack Box in Franklinville. MAKING THE presentation was Hope E. Ryden. who herself received the Board of Directors' Award for Humane Excellence. Ms. Ryden is an acclaimed naturalist, writer, photogra pher and filmmaker. The award was presented in recognition of I the extraordinary efforts she has undertaken on behalf of animals generally and. particulary the wild horse, the animal of the year Through her
legislative efforts, writing and photography. Ms Ryden has not only done much to improve the lives of America's wildlife but also has helped millions understand the fragile balance between wildlife survival and extinction. Miss Elwell also shared the spotlight with Cole McFarland, a dog trainer from California, who leaped in front of an onrushing train to save his dog, losing his leg in the rescue. McFarland recieved the Henry Bergh Medal of Honor for his heroic action. After the luncheon. Ms. Ryden presented Miss Elwell with an autograph ed copy of her most recent book.
