outdoors with Lou Kodia There's No 'Right' Way to Catch Fish
In over 35 years of writing I have b&ome known at times as the "Defender Of The Sharks" and the "PR person for the bluefish" among other titles, most less illustrious I just hate to see anglers turn up their noses at quali ty fighting fish because their techniques turn sport into work Bluefish are a case in point Sport is hooking and landing a big bluefish from a dead bruit or from the shore, be it bank, surf or pier, rather than hauling I one in on the end of a I hand line llandlines are I
work. Bluefish and my free time deserve better. NOT TO SAY I never used handlines or planers, because I have It is just that I would rather not That's why I like downriggers. prefer wire line fished on a rod and reel or trolling weights, or even rod planers for that matter Given the need. I will still, as I have in the past, use planers What brings this to mind is a conversation about the right" way to catch when they are not lures and are just below the surface in plain
sight Sometimes they are feeding on small fish but tend to ignore angler presentations It happens, and it is frustrating. The angler who asked me seemed surprised, first that I did not have a quick, easy answer as to how to turn on those blues which had frustrated him for two days. Moreover, he seemed surprised that there was no "right'' way to make the fish react under the circumstances he outlined I TOI.l) IIIM several of the things I had done tine was to use popping plugs skittered over the surface at a rapid rate to try to motivate the fish. I also have used plugs with a trailing bucktail or small spoon a foot or two behing the big lure and had that work I have cast Hopkins lures and bucktails and with an exaggerated buggy-whip motion made the lure literally jump as it came to4 the boat at high speed I have also skidded plugs across the surface at high speed as fast as I could crank a feel. On some occasions, these techniques will arouse the bluefish. Other times, they won't work We have tried all kinds of things in lure speed variation, changing sizes, colors or shapes, altering lures, making odd hall things of our own which defy description, and Swimming I>,M'I Jobs Offered VILLAS Tht- Lower Township Recreation ("enter is accepting applications for the positions of swimming Instructor and lifeguard for the sw im ming pool in North Cape May Applications can be picked up and filled out at the Recreation Center. 2600 Bayshore ltd For more in formation call the Rec Center at 8KB 7880 between 9 a m and 4pm
have stopped just short of hand grenades. STILL. AFTER a lifetime of fishing. I can offer no "right" or no "best" way to catch fish. There are no real shortcuts. One of the best fish catchers in our bag of tricks is a vivid imagination and somewhat of a good memory. Put both together. You might remember something someone once told you which worked for others. Use your imagination to duplicate the technique with what you have at hand We read an article on how the tube lure was perfected One nationally renowed writer indicates it started with a piece of a hula -hoop rigged to fisn for barracuda Yet. I know an old timer who was fishing blues with hose from an old fashioned enema bag before that writer or myself were ever born. What made anyone think a hunk of red or white hose would catch a fish? Ask the Indians who made lures out of thigh bones of small animals such as cats, or from the leg bones of chickens and turkeys Day Camj) For Soccer Under the sponsorship of the City of Cape May. THEY PREDATED hula hoops as well as enema bags. What is the best way to catch fish when they won't cooperate'' Fish do not ever stop biting. They will quit feeding If they do. we have to change plans of attack. Once they stop feeding, we have to anger them, invade their territory and threaten them, or we have to excite their curiosity. We also have to prey on their mean and nasty attitude which allows fish to drive away intruders out of sheer orneriness. Fish have no "right" or "best" or "preferred" ways to be caught. We supply those. FISHING REPORTS this week will "be confined to pure speculation I am writing this column in advance of a trip to Arizona to visit my youngest son and to attend an annual convention of the Outdoor Writers of America. I will leave behind t probably ) the best fishing in years, coupled with the best weather My absence will bo noted by a few party boat captains who are thoroughly convinced that I can make the wind blow by merely arriving at the dock with a fishing rod in hand Arizona is lovely. A great place to visit. However. I
cannot handle the desert, the dry arid country and the distance from the ocean for too long. FOR THOSE who have never been there. Arizona mountains send water down into the valleys in a system they call "washes" which are dry most of the time If there is rain or if there is a lot of snow melt, the washes run to the nearest river. In between storms, the highways cross these washes on bridges.sometimes hundreds of feet long. There is no water there, yet the bridges have signs Which read "No Fishing From This Bridge' posted on them I always felt that downright inhospitable. I thought New Jersey was bad enough warning people against fishing on bridges which have water under them. But to be told not to fish where there is not even water is cruel joke So much for Arizona I'll never be part of the migra tion to that Valley unless the ocean erodes California to the point where the Arizona desert becomes a big beach for Phoenix In my absence, lie aware that the fishing will be great. Don't waste fish, and leave at least a few for my return.
