' 'Stvintis Litterus' And Silk Purses
i By LARRY E. NEWBOLD "It can't be done!" "It's 1 impossible to clean up Cape May County !" These quotes come from a very learned individual who resides in Cape May County ( who shall be nameless ) . It has also been said by some wise and learned scholar that "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear."' Ye of little faith! Don't believe everything you read. It is possible to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear! the success of "Homo sapien swinus litterus" is proof. Thanks to the support of a few brave media people, this project has done a lot more than alert Cape May County people to the problems of litter which has been growing at an alarming rate in the woodlands and along the roadways of Cape May County. THIS PROJECT has proved that the system works (to the amazement of many!). County officials, local officials, law enforcement officials, media personalities, and the people of Cape May County are joining forces in an assault on "Homo sapien swinus litterus", also known as the common litterbug. This fictitious insect has sparked a new interest in the residents of * Cape May County. They realize that they can improve things by making their concerns known. Maybe it was just a coincidence that "Homo sapien swinus litterus" was conceived on the anniversary of VE Day. A lot of very courageous people lost their lives fighting for democracy, liberty, and freedom of speech. Many people seem to have forgotten just how important these freedoms were to our forefathers. FOR SOME reason we have become reluctant to speak out for fear of reprisals. This type of fear is unnatural and unhealthy in a democracy! As I recall, we went to war
against this very same thing. Fear of this type is propagated by lack of knowledge and the lack of citizen involvement in almost everything. When the private citizen is afraid to go to meetings, afraid to speak out, afraid to act — then we have a real problem in this country. Citizens have shown that they can make a difference, that they can speak out. that they can act — all because of a clean up project and a fictitious bug! Keep up the good work, gang — we can make Cape May County and NewJersey a better place because we work together EVERY PROJECT or idea recieves some degree of criticism. This project is no exception! John MacLeod. Senior County Agent, expresses concern for the negative image this project reflects on hogs! Of course, John has a picture of two cute hogs on his office wall entitled "Pigs are Beautiful." Sorry about that, John. You're right, modern swine farms are very clean and it is a sad commentary on our country that some pigs live better than some people As an act of Penance, I'll buy an extra pound of bacon this week. So where do we go with "Homo sapien swinus litterus" from here? My good secretary has drawn a sketch of "swinus litterus" which could be converted into a T-shirt logo. Sold on the boardwalk they could be used to educate our summer visitors. Joe Zelnik of the Cape May County Herald could add one to his "free T-shirt collection" or better yet — add it to his "wet T-shirt competition"! MAYBE WE could add "swinus IitterusT to the list of characters such as Smokey the Bear. Woodsy Owl, Cape May" County's Stowie, the Philly Phanatic, or McGruff-Take a bit out of crime! A man or lady with the head of a pig and insect wings — it has

possibilities! Such a character might become a hit with school children on regular educational visits. "It can't be done!" "It's impossible." Ye of little faith! — we have done it and with everyone's help, we'll continue to do it! "A sow's ear into a silk purse" — impossible you say! Don't you believe it!
