ED NOTE: This is a continuation of last week's col umn on flea control. Dogs are more likely to be bathed and then rinsed with a residual insecticide < dipped i by their owners. With a large dog. sometimes it is not economically feasible to use sprays and powders. Smaller dogs are more easily sprayed or powdered between dips, the frequency of dipping your dog owners will bathe and dip their dogs one to two times monthly in a flea infested area such as Cape May County. WHEN BCYINf; sham poos or dips, once again, read the label. Make sure you are getting an effective amount of insecticide for the purchase price Supermark-et-type over-the-counter merchandise may not be strong enough to meet your pet s needs for flea removal. Many times, stronger dips and flea products arc available at your veterinary office. feed store or pet shop than at a large retail shopping outlet Be a knowledgeable consumer; think about what you need and what you 'are paying for. Flea collars get lots of national advertising from the major pet supply companies. but really do not do the job ol flea killing for very long They are a convenient, high profit item for the companies. therefore the emphasis in TV ads and print advertisements. MOST FLEAS bite on the legs and tail-base, so a neck collar is placed on the wrong end of the pet anyway Also, some pets will show reaction lo stronger collars (which are available i such as neck itching or hair loss Unfortunately, many dog and cat owners buy an inexpensive flea collar and proclaim thai Ihey have done everything they can to control fleas for the summer Please do not depend on a flea collar as your only form of flea control Two prescription products may be available via your veterinarian Proban i Haver-Lockhart i is presently more wisely used than Prospot < Haver-Lock-hart > Proban has been around for more than ten years and is an oral insecticide given twice weekly to your dog in tablet or liquid form FOB CATS. Proban has not been FDA approved, but it my be prescribed by your veterinarian with the owner's informed consent The flea must bite the dog to be killed by Proban. and there is no repellant effect Since the fleas must still bite the dog. some itching number of fleas attacking the pet but compatible
sprays and/dips may still need to be used as well as household flea control exercised. t PROSPOT IS a bit newer on the* market . but had been i used in a1 different packag- ; ing in Florida prior to na- > tional distribution to veterinarians. It is a liquid insecticide in a glycol either base I which allows it to be absorbed rapidly into the skin of the dog when dropped ' carefully onto the area bei tween the shoulders The treatment is repeated every two weeks and has a flea-killing action similar to Proban. The flea bites the dog and dies after receiving the Prospot in the blood meal. Since this is a newproduct. availability in this area may be delayed. Finally, a few comments on the natural products which appear on retail shelves and in mail order catalogs every year and frequently disappear just as quickly. MOST OF THE products are not scientifically tested and are marked via endorsement by a veterinarian or a breeder in another part of the country. Many of the natural products are designed to repel fleas, not kill them, so effective control is not achieved. Brewer's yeast and garlic were frequently proclaimed to be effective over the last few years; they will not hurt your dog. but they also have been scientifically proven to be ineffective even as flea repellants THE Al.l .-NATURAL approach probably is not the best way to control fleas but at least the products appear to be harmless It is up to the pel owner to decide which flea control products are most effective and are worth the financial investment The major factors to remember in flea control are: li Control the household environment where most fleas reproduce 2 » Minimize the number of fleas on the pet. 3i Work on your flea < and tick i problem frequently and with products that are giving you the best results Make intelligent flea product purchases from reliable sources. 4) Always read labels, follow directions and knowwhy you are using a given product COP Meeting VILLAS — The regular meeting of the Villas Women's Regular Republican Club will be held 8 o'clock tonight. New members are welcome. i
