By Libby Demp Forrest THE SUMMER SOLSTICE is the major H event on this week's astrological calendar. I Summer arrives at 5:44 A.M. Friday, making June 21st the longest day of the ■ year; On the first day of summer the sun is I highest in the sky at noon, and the longest I da^ of the year between sunrise and I sunset. After summer peaks, the hours of I daylight begin, at first, an undetectable I decline, alas. Such is time. • ♦ • June, moon, spoon, to use an oldI fashioned phrase; well, romance certainI ly seems to belong to summer, especially I for the young who enjoy the beaches — and I the beach beauties. Cape May County has I the corner on beach beauties along with a I steady crop of admirers of beach beauties. I Come on now, don't you agree Cape May I County has the World 's best looking kids? * * « NOW THAT it's nearly offical summer- ■ time, it's a tradition for us to take a stroll ■ during a perfect June day to gather wildflowers. We have our favorite little HI roadside patches where we go year after HI year to gather some wildflowers. We take them home and arrange them on the dining room table — sweet peas, wild roses and Queen Anne's lace. Ah, the world is a sweet, sweet place during June. • • • With everything open again, we love to try out as many restaurants as passible. Wonder where we've been lately? Here goes: a „
AVALON'S SIDEWALK CAFE. Summer means ice cream to us. We can't ever recall meeting someone who didn't like ice cream eaten one way or another. Avalon's Sidewalk Cafe at 26th Street at the Bay, Avalon serves ice cream just about every way we can think of and they serve only the most delicious natural ice cream such as Bassett's, Barricini, and Haagen Daz. There are all kinds of fruit and ice cream concoctions here, kid's specialties (such as the Happy Face — three scoops of your favorite-ice cream garnished with fruit and candy pieces) , and light-hearted take out items. Sandwiches and fruit salads too. • * * WINDR1FT. The Windrift at 80th and the Beach, Avalon is right out close to the water, beckoning diners to enjoy both the view and the good food. We usually chose seafood over meat because we love the best of shore life, and The Windrift offers a respectable selection for both land and sea lovers. Our favorite meal here is the broiled seafood combo for $13.95. It includes crabmeat, shrimp, scallops, flounder and clam casino. The Windrift serves breakfast and luncheons also. The creamed chipped beef served on toas' is a great way to start the day. • * • T.J. SCANLON'S. T.J. Scanlon's, located at 78th St. and Dune Drive, Avalon offers a lively atmosphere during the Happy Hour, Friday from 4:30 to 6:30. Families enjoy the robust menu that includes choices for all tastes, including Flounder Almondine, Sauteed Shrimp and
Scallops, Filet Mignon and Chicken San Marino. The Veal Marsala is especially recommended (tender medallions of veal, sauteed with mushrooms in a Marsala wine sauce). Scanlon's is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails. COUNTRY HOUSE. The County House Restuarant, on Rt. 9, Burleigh is as American as apple pie (p.s. the pastries are out of this world). As homespun a restaurant as you're going to find in Cape May County, the County House has been serving delicious food in a comfy atmosphere for three decades The poultry dishes are always a good choice and are the drawing card for many a family that return here season after season. The homemade soups are favorites of ours. Specials are served from 4:30 to 5:30. ♦ » » LAYRE'S DUTCH KITCHEN. Located on the Delaware Parkway at the Beach, Layre's Dutch Kitchen has been a longtime county favorite on many years. The restaurant overlooks the Delaware Bay, so meals are an assured scenic pleasure. But, of course, Layre's serves pleasurable food to accompany the scenic delights. Twilight dinners are specially priced to appeal to thrifty diners who enjoy quality food for a budget price. These are served Friday and Saturday, 4 to 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 :30 to 6 p.m. The regular menu is always worth looking into.
