The latest effort. Rogues Gallery (CBS Associated », from the hard working British rock and roll band Slade is another masterful outing. Long ago, Slade perfected the hit formula of meshing heavy metal power chords with infectious pop melodies. Although it took longer than expected to secure a firm footing here in the States. Slade can now be thought of as a worldwide success. Rogues Gallery will only help to further their good fortune. The album works because of its memorable tunes,, powerful musicianship. and Noddy Holder's raspy vocals. This is raw, simple rock that shows no . sign of aging.
JAZZ TENOR saxophonist/flutist Charles Lloyd's A Night in Copenhagen (Blue Note) is a triumphant return. Once considered one of jazz's brightest hopes in the mid-60's, Lloyd fell from grace with a string of dull, uninspired albums. Here Lloyd no longer sounds like a spent force. His solos are rich, melodic, and well thought out. His musicians— especially the awesome piano playing of Michel Pelrucciani— match Lloyd's passionate playing. It's nice to find Lloyd is still capable or performing with this much intensity. THE LORDS's The Method To Our Madness ( IRS ) is a solid collection of rock tunes that build on various 60s traditions, yet are fueled with a 70s punk attitude. Brian James' guitar work, along with Nick Turner's drumming, givesThe Lords a firm foundation. but it's lead vocalist Stiv Bator who makes these songs come alive. The Lords are getting better with each effort and surely commercial success can't be far away. John Abercrombie is one of jazz's most vital guitarists. Although technically sound. Abercrombie isn't afraid of exploring new areas. He takes chances. Night (ECM) is chock full of mindbending solos that are fluid, passion-filled exercises that could only be the result of someone who is one hundred percent comfortable with his instrument. On Night Abercrombie is superbly backed by Mike Brecker on tenor sax. Jan Hammer on keyboards, and Jack DeJohnette on drum*- Abercrombie might be a jazz musician, but ail guitarists could learn a few tricks from him Open House At Center SEAVILLE — An open I house for members of the county Chamber of Commerce will be held noon-4 p m tomorrow to mark the season's opening of the chamber's Welcome and Information Center on the Garden State Parkway at mile post 18 here Refreshments will be served.
