MUA Responding To Public Gripes

BURLEIGH - Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority officials are taking steps to alleviate a complaint raised by area residents recently at an open house at the authority's Middle Township transfer station here The transfer station enables solid waste haulers from the lower portion of the county to dump their refuse here rather than traveling up to the new sanitary landfill in Woodbine The refuse is then compacted by MUA workers and transferred daily to the landfill. "THE BIGGEST complaint from the 12 people who attended the open house." said Solid Waste Manager Theodore O'Neill, "is that waste haulers have been using Oyster Road to get to the transfer station, a route that is prohibited byMiddle Township ordinances." According to O'Neill, this complaint is a valid one and the MUA will ask Middle Township officials to enforce the ordinance. "The MUA will also reissue its own directive to the haulers," O'Neill said, "indicating that they are supposed to use Indian

Trail and go north on Shun- " pike Road to get to the transfer station." O'NEILL POINTED out at a tour of the landfill for Gloucester and Hunterdon County officials earlier in the day that the authority has the ability to enforce it's rules through its power to deny access to any hauler who doesn't comply. "This is a pretty effective club," he said during the earlier three-hour tour for about 30 officials involved in landfill siting activities in their counties. O'Neill said the residents at the transfer station's open house were also interested in the handling of wastewater runoff at the facility. He said they were shown the holding tank for the water where it is pumped out and taken to one of the county's wastewater treatment plants for disposal. "WE ALSO have monitor wells that are checked quarterly to be sure no pollutants are getting into the groundwater," O'Neill said, "and we will send copies of these reports to the residents who came to the open house." Also attending the open house were Middle Township Mayor Michael Voll and Committeeman James Alexis, MUA Commissioner Herbert VandePol, a resident of Middle Township; MUA Solid Waste Supervisor Steven Eisenhauer and David Prigge-„ meier, manager of the transfer station. yz.
