Crest S&L Alone at Top With Money Market Rate

By JOSEPH R. ZELNIK For the first time since last November, Crest Savings & Loan of Wildwood Crest and First Savings and Loan of Sea Isle City are not sharing the crown for offering the county's highest money market deposit account interest rates. Crest was paying 8 percent last week, compared to the 7.75 percent at First. A rate also being paid by Ocean City Home Savings & Loan and Sturdy Savings & Loan. The 91-day Treasury Bill, which used to be an indicator for the 2%-year-old money market accounts, is about as low as it's been in five years, 7.07 percent last ANY COUNTIANS living__ on the interest from these accounts should be switching from steaks to hotdogs because the rates for these investments also are

as low as they've ever been. Six financial institutions — all banks as opposed to S&Ls — are paying less than 7 percent. And the Super Now, similar to the money market, but with unlimited checking, is as low as 5.3 percent, and as high as 7, once again at Crest. Incidentally, despite the merger of Midlantic Bank and Heritage Bancorporation, their local offices are still separate and paying different rates. When that merger becomes effective, there will be 14 financial institutions in the county. ALSO INCIDENTALLY. Collective Federal still has what it calls a money market passbook account. It's paying 7.6 percent, onetenth of a percentage more than its money market, at — 7.5. One can't write checks from it, but one can move money in and out at will. All these rates could drop still further before this column is read, but here are

the 15 financial institutions in alphabetical order and their money market and Super Now interest rates of last week. Anchor Savings & Loan, 7.5, 6.25. Cape May County Savings & Loan, 7.6, 6.25. Collective Federal Savings & Loan, 7.5, 6.5. Crest Savings & Loan, 8.7. First Fidelity Bank/South, 6.75, no Super Now. First Jersey National Bank/South, GMMA, 7; LI A, 6.85; Super Now, 5.61.
