Hobie Cat Classic Enlivens Weekend

CAPE MAY - The Atlantic Coast championship Regatta for Hobie Cat sailboats will be held Saturday and Sunday in the ocean off this city. About 175 brightly colored catamarans will be launched from the beach at Grant Street and run a triangular course. In each race there are five or more separate starts for different skill levels and boat lengths. Three or four races will take place on both Saturday and Sunday, starting about 9:30 a.m. on both days. The high speed boats are launched through the surf, and return to the beach at breaks between races. HIGH WINDS often per mit the one or two person crews to "fly a hull", and the rapid acceleration 3 Teams Get Off On Top CAPE MAY - The City 1985 Women's Softball League began this past week with three games being played. Vance's Bar started the new season in fine fashion as it defeated the Pirate's den 11-3 behind solo home runs by Myra Valentine and Cindy Randall. THE U.S.C.G. Sugar Bears defeated Quo Vadis 3-2 in 10 innings as Debbie Winslow hit the gamewinning home run for the Sugar Bears. Pitchers Lisa Arnold and Vinnia McCoy pitched well for the Sugar Bears as they allowed a combined three walks in the game. Middle Recreation got off to a good start as it defeated the Washington Inn 11-0 behind the play of Sena Reed, who went 4-4 with three runs scored. Kitty Hadley also had a fine game as she had two hits and two runs scored. STANDINGS Vance'i Bar 1-0 U.S.C.G. Pa., and is known as the Cape May Classic. It is sponsored by the City of Cape May. Schaefer Brewing, Epson, and Sailboat Headquarters, Inc. This regatta is a championship of the Atlantic Coast Region consisting of New Jersey. Maryland. Delaware. Virginia, West Virginia and Pa. Boats adhere to strict one design class rules and thus provide competition which depends on sailing skill and tactics. THE SAILORS vie For trophies, which are awarded at the end of the regatta, and qualify for the National Championships. Recent television advertising has brought the Hobie Cat to the attention of many sailors and non-sailors. A large crowd of spectators is expected, and will take advantage of the Aces Add Williams WILD WOOD - In an ef fort to plug the gap left by the injured Gary McLain. the Aces, this city'^entry in the United States Basketball League, have brought up Stan Williams, a star of the 1981 LaSalle team. The 6-8" forward went 2 for 2 from the field. 4 for 4 from the line and grabbed two rebounds in just 11 minutes of play in his first performance. ACES' GUARD Jeff Ad kins was nosed out of the first USBL Player of the Week selection by Springfield's Ron Crevier. Adkins popped in a buzzer beater against Connecticut and hit for 36 ( regular game league high! points against New Jersey. Ticket information for Aces' home games is available by calling 522-8877. Ceremonies included introduction of players and coaches, team pictures, and a dedication. The league was dedicated in memory of the Township's late mayor. Frank L. Murphy Sr. Mrs. Murphy was on hand for the presentation. A special guest appearance was made by Yogi Bear and two bear friends. The bears are from Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort in Ocean View. Games will be played every Saturday afternoon during June at the Dennis • Township Elementary School.
