Cape Museum For Fishing Industries
TRENTON - Despite C^pe May County's historical connection with the sea and commercial and sports fishing industries which contribute heavily to its economy, there is no museum in the county or nearby NewJersey to focus attention on fishing. Assemblyman Guy Muziani. Cape MayCumberland, wants to remedy that situation. He has proposed creation of a Nautical. Commercial Fishing and Recreational Fishing Museum in the county. THE LOCAL legislator is hopeful of state funding for his idea. The plan has received favorable consideration by the governor's staff, says Muziani, and $250,000 to be used as seed money for the project has been included in the supplemental budget appropriation, to be voted on soon. Proposed as the site of the museum is Historic Cold Spring Village, on Seashore Road. Cold Spr ing. which is already own ed and operated by the county. "Cape May County s economy is basically sustained by the tourism in dustry. says Muziani in his proposal A museum of the type envisioned here would add a year-around dimension to tourism and tourism promotion of the region "AT TIIE SAME time, such a museum would offer rich cultural, historical and educaitonal opportunities for visitors and residents alike "A museum as proposed here would also maximize the use of funds by creating a living memorial to the past and a living projecl for the future "Such an enterprise would maximize coopera lion between slate, county, and local entities which are
e already in place and in s need of a project such as i this to become involved 1 in." Muziani declares. THE FACILITY, he » says, will house 'many of the things out of the ? county's historical heritage i which now lie in attics, l garages and basements for lack of a place to put them on display." Existing photographic > records of pound boats ; working off the beaches of i Wildwood and Sea isle CiI ty; the old party and I charter boat fleets, the ; commercial fleets at work or at dock and of work on boats under construction should all be preserved, argues Muziani STUDENTS from all over the state could be bused to the area to visit the museum, declares Muziani, and the learning opportunity could be enhanc ed by visits to other nearby historical sites in the county The proposed grant, said the assemblyman, would provide seed money to create a basic building Addihonal funds can be solicited from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other private and public sources which make money available for such .-ultural activities. Sources of funds through grants could be used for operaiton. artifact acquisi tion. display construction, and promotion. Muziani says College Honor For Helverson AVALON - Re nee Helverson. daughter of Rob and Mary Helverson.
