Take Care In Handling Pesticides

COURT HOUSE - Pesticides are often needed to control a large number of garden pests effectively. According to Larry Newbold. Cape May County Agricultural Agent, the key to their safe use is to follow directions on the label. Do not use any pesticide preparation for any purpose for which it is not specified. Use only when needed, generally whenlnsect populations appear to be getting out of hand. The pesticides listed below have been federally registered for home garden use: Bacillus thuringiensis (Dipel, etc.), Carbaryl, Diazinon, Dicofol , Dimethoate, Endosulfan, Malathion, Methoxychlor, and Rotenone, EACH INSECTICIDE has a statement on the label indicating a sufficient waiting period for each specific crop — that is. the number of days you must wait after you apply a specific insecticide before you can harvest that crop. This may range from 0 to 21 days. It is suggested that you wait at least one day after using any pesticide, and longer if the label specifies, and wash all treated vegetables before eating. Pesticides used improperly can be injurious to people, animals and plants. Follow the directions and heed all precautions. Pesticides are safe when used according to directions.
