(From Page 22) k about nutritionist Elaine and epidemiologist Dr. Bob Juni, our neighbors and friends who are on one of their extensive tours of the Middle East? We have been biting our nails since the day the hostages were first taken in Beirut. They're due home soon, Allah be praised! BEST THING about writing this column is getting to know people we might not have met otherwise. Three weeks ago, a true gentleman of the old school, Eugene Gellert came to bring us a letter to our editor, published in last week's Herald. Gellert stayed almost two hours telling about his career as export manager for the Eberhard Faber pencil company. Gellert's descriptions are great; his legs "have served me faithfully for 97 years, but now my wheels are complaining" and "if 1 last I'll be among few to have been Halley's comet twice." (Halley's comet should be visible in March and April of 1986. > His chauvinism about Stone Harbor (i.e. "lovely, clean, crime free spot on the Atlantic seashore ... a model small town, without slums, and all dwellings in tip-top shape") is totally sincere and he describes this century as "the greatest in all history". Sallir Ruth MacKorkell gave a highly professional book review of Russell Baker's best seller Growing Up at the Women's Civic Club of Stone Harbor, June 18. She told us just
enough about the 4 firstperson narrative to whet our appetites. It's geared towards persons who grew up during the depression, nourished by macaroni and cheese and creamed dried beef, with chicken on Sundays. Like many women present and the author we remember returning from church, sniffing the fragrance of a roaster and reading the Saturday Evening Post while grownups heatedly debated the relative merits of Pres. Hoover and the eloquent FDR. Club prexy Ellie Smith reported slate of officers for the coming year would be announced at the July meeting and bridge lessons for beginners would commence Thursday, June 27 at 10 a.m. Viki Wear announced that a course in water color painting would be held at the club starting 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 31. with four more classes to be given in August. Gifted artist Martin Lebow will instruct a minimum of 10 students. OUR GUY really knows how to hurt a gal. This week the phone rang, as usual at dinnertime, and we turned down a request to bake a cake for a sale we had been asked to publicize. My spouse, who knows I'm a pushover for good causes, asked why I'd refused. "Do you have any idea what would happen if I agreed to bake a cake for just one event?" I inquired. The reply was swift and it smarted: "Yes, the whole island would be poisoned."
