By Libby Demp Forrest JULY IS GETTING CLOSER and all I the hoopla of Independence Day is just I around the corner. The corn is a growin' I and we'll soon be a eatin'. (That's a corny I joke, don't you agree? Last Friday we saw the sun reach its I highest point in the sky at noon, which I made the noon shadows the shortest they I ever get. Now the sun will be getting a litI tie lower in the sky each day at noon, and I the points of sunrise and sunset will creep I slowly southward, and the daylight hours I will grow fewer. Alas. *••• As June closes, be on the lookout" for I sweet, juicy blueberries. This is a treat I we always look forward to. A bowl of I blueberries to nibble on, a good book at H hand, and our favorite porch chair is the I nicest way to spend a June evening. «•** WHILE the days are long (wish tho I they were more leisurely!), we try to I spend as many hours out of doors as I possible. We'll even invent reasons to go I outside while we should be doing other I things (such as writing this column). I When band concert season gets underH way, that signifies another reason for,us I to stay outdoors. There are thosey/ho will I only take their music in a concert hall, I but we like our outdoors. It's good for the I imagination, we always say. ***• Also good for everyone is eating out at I an imaginative restaurant or two. Here I are several we've been to lately:
CRYSTAL ROOM Cape May is a town nowadays with unlimited fine eating places, yet the Crystal Room located in the Atlas Motor Inn, Beach Drive, near Madison Avenue, remains one of the finest. The Champagne Sunday Brunch served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is still only $8.95 and what a superb array of good food is put on the groaning board! Eggs, hot cakes, chipped beef, bagels and low, Flounder Francaise, short ribs, seafood salad, desserts and fresh fruit are just some of the excellent choices. The Crystal Room is open daily. The Veal Atlas for $13.95 is one of our favorite dinners. • •** ED ZABERER'S. What compares to Ed Zaberer's? "The old original one and only" Zaberer's, North Wildwood is one of the best known restaurants in the area and for very good reasons. Aside from the fact that it is a huge dining establishment, it serves excellent food in an atmosphere that has to be seen to be believed. Filled with antiques and a fabulous collection of/ Tiffany lamps, it has been served delicious meals for generations. Prices 'are surprisingly affordable for such an atmosphere. Zaberized cocktails are still well, as Zaberizing as always. • ••• THE OLD GRANDE RESTAURANT. Along with the take me back atmosphere of Cold Spring Village on Seashore Road is The Old Grange Restaurant where food of the past as well as the present is served in an historic 18th century atmosphere. Some of the menu selections include
foods named to keep the past alive, such as the Woodbine Junction Burger, The Mauricetown (oysters, shrimp, scallops, flounder fried to a golden brown combined with garlic crabs), and yes, The Erma Combination 0 h Main lobster stuffed with crabmeat, stone crab claws and garlic crabs). There also the Cape May Broiled Combination and a Five Mile Beach Lobster Thermidore. The Old Grange is located on Seashore Road. THE SWALLOWS. The Swallows, located at 400 Broadway at Congress Street, Cape May does not just serve food; it presents food in a dramatic way to whet the appetitie even more. A restored mansion is the setting for exceptional food, where service is unsurpassed. The seasonings are perfection; the cuisine consistently imaginative. Nightly specials are served from 6 p.m. on. Reservations are suggested — call 884-0400. WASHINGTON INN. Considered one of the best restaurants in Cape May, The Mj Washington Inn located at 801 Washington Street is so good it has set the H tone and quality for other area H restaurants. Open daily from 5 p.m. on, The Washington Inn is the ultimate place to go for a fine dinner. The screened porch is our favorite place to sit, but the indoor greenery . provides an old-fashioned at- H mosphere as well. The food is excellent; H excellent.
