Ocean City Plans July Jubilee Week
OCEAN CITY - Body builders, bottles, balloons and much more will be part of Ocean City's first "July Jubilee Week,'' Saturday, June 29, through July 6 The city and chamber of commerce have planned a week of entertainment, unusual contests and "oldfashioned" retail prices with activities capped by a spectacular July 4th fireworks display. SPECIAL events include a balloon launch contest Saturday at 8th and Asbury Avenue to kick off the celebration. Participants may register in front of Stainton's Department Store starting 12:30 p.m. with blast-off set for approximately 1 p.m. Balloons will be on sale for those who are balloonlcss. Prizes will be awarded for the balloon
retrieved first and the one traveling the farthest. Twins and look-alikes are invited to join the Twin Contest. 6:30 p.m. Saturday, BroadwaWt and Moorlyn Terrace. Prizes will be awarded to those looking most alike and least alike. There will be a special category for lookalikes not related. A "MESSAGE In the Bottle Contest" will be held 1 p.m. Monday, July 1. on the Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace. Prizes will be given for the best decorated bottles. Bottles will be set afloat 25 miles offshore and various prizes awarded for those found first, and those traveling farthest. Three treasure hunts are set: 1 p.m. Saturday, 8th and Asbury Avenue; 1 p.m. Monday, July 1, Broadwalk at Moorlyn Terrace, and 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 34th Street business area. There will be a bodybuilding demonstration 4 p.m. Friday, July 5, on the Boardwalk at Moorlyn. It will feature professionals demonstrating bodybuilding techniques and routines. MUSIC PIER entertainment for the week will include special concerts by the Ocean City "Pops" Orchestra, Sunday, June 20, through Thursday, July 4. at the pier. Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace, starting 8 p.m. The July 4th concert will begin 7:30 p.m. On Friday. July 5, a youth dance will be held at the Pier, 8 p.m., followed by the Polish American String Band. 8 p.m Satur day, July 6. July 4 will be celebrated by a spectacular fireworks display, 9 p.m 6th Street Football Field. The fireworks will be the largest display in the city's history featuring a 300-shell finale. TWO BIKE parades, one starting at 465h Street and Central Avenue, and another at Longport Bridge, are set for 10 a.m. A kite flying contest, 6-8 p.m . and banjo concert. 7-9 p.m.. will precede the fireworks display at the football field. Jim Lyman, singer-song-writer, will entertain through the week at various downtown and boardwalk locations Ventriloquist David Pendelton will perform at the Football Field prior to the fireworks.
