Local superstars, Philadejphia's The Hooters seem on the verge of . finding international fame with their major label debut, Nervous Night (Columbia). Taking it at face value. The Hooters have created a much better than average mainstream pop-rock album. The melodies stand up to repeated spins and the musicianship and vocals are strong enough to save the more mundane moments. If one was going to find fault it would be with the sameness in the production. There's a high gloss finish throughout, which tends to become tiresome. An occasional rough edge would have livened things up a bit more. ON THE OTHER hand, there are a few pleasant surprises, which bode well for future efforts. The Hooters often feature Eric Bazilian's mandolin as the lead instrument. This makes for a unique blend of pop, new wave, light ska rnythms, and, thanks to the mandolin, folk, setting them apart from their chart competitors.
Although "All You Zombies" is the tune that's sweeping the country, "Where Do The Children Go" is the one that shows the many sides of The Hooters. JOINED BY Scandal's Patty Smyth. The Hooters have a track that neatly showcases their penchant for strong vocals and colorful musical backing (mandolin and melodica). Oddly enough, the song is reminiscent of early Fairport Convention with Smyth sounding like the late Sandy Denny. Are The R&ters closet folkies? Hopefully, their forthcoming success won't prevent The Hooters from taking chances with their music, as it's one of their most endearing qualities. Fell From The Sun (Enigma. P.O. Box 2428, El Segundo, CA. 90245) is an intriguing four track EP by Kendra Smith (ex -Dream Syndicate), David Koback (ex-Rain Parade), and Keith Mitchell that should please lovers of the late 60's, San Franciscoflavored rock. ROBACK'S guitar and organ playing often resembles early Pink Floyd, an influence that's brought even more to the fore when he sings the lead vocal on "Lullabye". Steve Wynn might be considered the brains behind The Dream Syndicate, but a lot of people felt the group lost its soul when Smith departed. No matter, it's just nice to hear her melodic bass runs. Her voice might sound flat and unemotional to some, but it perfectly meshes with Roback's guitar leads and it's always atmospheric. Fell From The Sun isn't for everyone, I guess, but, hopefully, ensign will shell out money for this as the trio needs to be encouraged. They're on to something that bears watching
