The upper torso and the legs get support and protection from the rib cage and the pelvis. In between, the low back area is more vulnerable. The lumbar vertebrae have only muscles and ligaments to support them and keep them in place. Yet it is in this area that most of the strain of lifting occurs. Lumbago, a form of rheumatism, causes contractions and unbalance of the large muscles of the lower back. This in turn results in a shift in spinal posture, compressed and irritated nerves, and pain. Chiropractic offers relief from the pain of lumbago.
