Avalon Mayor Replaces Judyski With Stattner

AVALON — Ignoring threats of a recall effort, Mayor Rachel Sloan Monday appointed Steven A. Stattner, 40-year-old Realtor and developer, to the Planning Board,

replacing Phil Judyski, whose four-year termliad expired. Realtor-developer-Chamber of Commerce forces had been lobbying for a Judyski reappointment. But Realtor William Leahy, cited most often as the person to consult about a recall, told this newspaper Monday that he knew of no recall "right now." SLOAN SAID she "found" Stattner herself, meeting him at the First United Methodist Church, which both attend. He is a two-year, yearround resident whose business is primarily in the Philadelphia-Cherry Hill area, the mayor said. "It became a very controversial issue in the town." the mayor said. "I heard from so many people against the (Judyski) reappointment. I have to listen 3 On D.U. to the whole town, not just one segment of it. I am representing a cross-sec-tion from all areas of concerned people." THE CHAMBER of Commerce had petitioned the mayor to reappoint Judyski, but former chamber president Dan Kean said the chamber "definitely" was not involved in a recall, which he termed inappropriate for that organization. Mayor Sloan was elected to council in 1979 and to a four-year term as mayor in 1983. The Planning Board has nine members and two alternates. In other mayor appointments Monday; Member Tom Marvel and alternate James C. German switched places, with German getting the balance of Marvel's term ending in 1987. ^ Harry Clayton was reappointed. In another bit of musical chairs. Planning Board member Daniel W. Hildreth, elected to council in May, resigned his Planning Board post and council appointed him as a council member of the board, replacing former council member James Bus ha. The mayor appointed Raymond Beck to fill the unexpired term of Hildreth.

Top Scores At SJCA ERMA — Nearly 90 percent of the students at South Jersey Christian Academy scored at their grade level or above on the California Achievement Tests administered in May. At the class average level, every class at South Jersey scored ahead of its grade level, compared with its counterparts nationwide. The highest class average was in seventh grade, where students scored more than three years above the national average. (This means that they scored at levels comparable to tenth graders.) Kindergarteners scored an average 19 percent above the national level in their Pre-Reading Readiness total, and 10 percent above in their Math Readiness. In the remaining grades, class averages at all but two grade levels were a minimum one-and-one-half years ahead of grade level standards. The school credits its students' strong scores to SJCA's commitment to God-centered learning; its emphasis on solid academic foundations; small class sizes , and close working relationships between parents and teachers. South Jersey Christian Academy is a K-8 Christian day school, located in the Tabernacle Church complex here.
