Rx 1 Health Watch by Dr Robert C Beit man
If you think you have hemorrhoids, or know someone who has them then this is an important article for you. Bleeding hemorrhoids can be accuratelydiagnosed only by examination with the rigid or flexible proctoscope. Neither you nor your doctor can guess that's the cause of your symptoms. I'm harping on this because one of the most regrettable reasons for colon cancer's going undiagnosed is that people think they have hemorrhoids and ignore their symptoms. Bleeding from the rectum isn't always colon cancer, it is most often hemorrhoids, but what if you're wrong? THERE ARE many interesting facts to be learned about hemorrhoids. We all have a set of veins that surround the anal opening; their name is "hemorrhoids". It's when these become painful due to pressure from pregnancy, everyday activity, diarrhea and constipation that you develop "hammered" trouble. Commercials to the contrary, researchers do not find that hemorrhoids cause itching. It is believed that anal itching is due to drinking too much coffee or the intake of other irritating foods, overcleaning of the area with soap, or causing abrasion from too much rubbing. INTERNAL hemorrhoids are often treated with high fiber diets. These diets coupled with good water intake make the bowel movements nice and
smooth and less likely to further irritate the hemorrhoidal area. Once hemorrhoids begin to stick out of the anus, your doctor may try injections, rubber band treatments or surgery to correct the problem. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services none of the over-the-counter medicines will reduce, prevent or cure hemorrhoids. PREVENTION ideas that work for many are not to spend long periods of time on the toilet, not to hold it in when you have the urge, and to add fiber to your diet. With good care, most hemorrhoidal symptoms will go away naturally in a few days. In the case of swollen hemorrhoids with a blood clot found by your doctor, she/he may put you on a stool softener and recommend sitz baths. Most often the clot will dissolve slowly on its own. Some doctors will remove this kind of hemorrhoid if it is found in the first three days. More importantly, don't assume you have hemorrhoids. Bleeding from the rectum can be a warning sign of cancer or ther diseases and must be investigated. Rectal bleeding can come from fissures, -colitis, ulcers, polyps, 1 hemorrhoids, cancers and even bacterial infection. Health Watch is a public education project of the Cape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society, of which Dr. Beitman is president-elect. For free literature on colon cancer call 886-1154.
