GEORGE TIIOROGOOD S new album. Maverick l EMI America), is another strong collection of upbeat blues and primitive rockers. Thorogood might not be the best vocalist, but few can question his sincerity. As a guitarist. Thorogood has learned his lessons well as he uses a firm base of Chuck Berry, Elmore James, and Bo Diddlev riffs to get his point across. His band. The Destroyers, give him plenty of room to flex his muscles, yet saxophonist Hank Carter isn't afraid to step into the foreground occasionally to deliver a hot solo. Like the J. Geils Band and The Rolling Stones, George Thorogood should be commended for giving

E life and vitality to the blues v and not making the music I sound as it belongs in a r museum. t LOS ANGELES* The ? Blasters are in the same t boat as Thorogood, but, to t their credit, they're slighti ly more versatile. Growing up, The Blasters were exI posed to all styles of music ; and they learned at an early age to find something worthwhile in any genre. HardLine (Slash/ Warners) is a fine example of a band that can handle a wide spectrum of music, with The Blasters boldly tackling blues, rockabilly, R&B, country, and plain old rock and roll. WHAT HOLDS it together are the distinctive vocals of Phil Alvin, the consistent lead guitar of Dave Alvin, and a rhythm section that's rock steady. Talent and confidence in themselves not only permit The Blasters to take chances, but it's the reason they succeed. This is an excellent sampling of modem j versions of American roots music. Enjoy. Sons Of The Blues are a talented, young Chicago blues band, but their album, Where's My Money (Red Beans, 2240 N. Magnolia, Chicago. IL. 60614). is, at best, a partial success. At times, the band can be enthralling, but, too often, the music lacks punch. With the resurgence in 1 the popularity of heavy j metal, veteran rockers Mountain have reformed. Still, under the guidance of j vocalist/lead guitarist j Leslie West, Go For Your { Life, (Scotti } Brothers/Epic) isn't a bad comeback effort. ji West's guitar has always rj been Mountain's spark £ and. as can be expected, it's in the fore again. His solos range from inspired to pointless, but. one thing is certain, they're always flashy. One pleasant surprise is that West seems more confident as a vocalist, giving Mountain more depth. It wouldn't be farfetched to say it seems likely Mountain could soon return to their former glory I I Jt* 1 m | §HYp§mM j vT Beach Boutique < Jewelry •Antiques I Gifts j Collectibles t I s" i
