Alumna of the Month Rina Terry completed a "Stop Smoking" clinic in 1976, and to reward herself she decided to take a creative writing course at Cumberland County College. "During registration I reviewed the college catalog and really got excited about the interesting course offerings, " Terry recalled. "I ended up enrolling as a full-time student." Before registering, Terry met with an advisor, then took the New Jersey College Basic Skills Placement Test. Assessments indicated she was talented in English skills but needed remedial education in mathematics. Terry said college personnel provided personalized instruction that enabled her to upgrade her mathematics skills to college level. And humanities professors "challenged me to achieve my highest potential in English courses," she noted. The alumna is now pursuing a master's degree in creative writing at Temple University . She has studied under Robert Greeley, Sonia Sanchez, Susan Stewart and Stephen Dunn, resident poet at Stockton State College who recently received a Guggenheim Fellowship. "I began to take writing seriously at Cumberland," the 36-year-old Tuckahoe resident said. "Professors there convinced me that I had talent, and that writing poetry wasn't a frivolous pursuit, but a challenging art form. "The humanities professors at CCC have a love of the7" English language and it's transmitted to serious students. By the time 1 graduated, I had developed a new respect for and appreciation of the craft of poetry . "> In 1981, Terry earned, with highest honors, a bachelor's degree in psychology /creative writing from Stockton. She has worked as a continuing education coordinator for the Garden Area Health Education Center, administered by Bridgeton Hospital and the Shore AHEC, administered by Atlantic City Medical Center. At CCC, Terry was editor of L'Espirit, the college literary , magazine. She was selected as the top humanities student during her.sophomore year, and she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Who's Who Among American Junior College Terry was also poetry editor of Stockpot, Stockton's literary magazine, and the recipient of a creative writing award there for a collection of her poems. "I'm compelled to write because I'm fascinated with the power of language," Terry said. "A strong poem is universal; ~ it can be a poet's gift to the people." Terry cited her children, Paul, 15, and Tara, 14, as daily inspirations whose support has been "essential in whatever success I've achieved." We 're Proud of Our Alumni v I /
