Fireworks Warning Issued
COURT HOUSE - An appeal to residents and merchants of Middle Township to cooperate in keeping the Fourth of July holiday free of injuries from fireworks has been issued by Police Chief Edward Hansen. Everyone must work to prohibit sale and possession of fireworks, Hansen declares, to prevent burns, eye injuries, and more serious injuries caused by fireworks. NEW JERSEY laws on fireworks are very restfictive, Hansen points out. Only paper and plastic caps for use in toy guns are legal. Firecrackers, Roman candles, aerial rockets, the very dangerous M-80's and novelty fireworks such as cigarette loads, trick matches. trick noisemakers, smoke grenades, toy propellants and sparklers are illegal to sell and/or possess in this state The fireworks laws are enforced by the municipal police department and the Department of Labor Any person found guilty of possessing fireworks, including sparklers, with the intention of selling them can be fined up to $1,000 and/or imprisoned up to six
months. ANY PERSON found using fireworks can be fined up to $500 and/or imprisoned up to six months. In addition, fireworks that are
confiscated will be destroyed. If the fireworks sold cause an accident, no matter who is at fault, the seller of the fireworks may be sued.
