Artists Vie for Courts, Crest Haven Projects

COURT HOUSE - The line of artists hankering for a piece of county action grows. Under a two-year-old policy of providing "up to 14 percent of the cost" of public buildings for original works of art, two projects in the design state — a new Crest Haven Nursing Home and a court -facility renovation — have $50,000 apiece for art. That really amounts to about $45,000 apiece for art; the other $5,000 apiece going for honorariums, art consultant fees, etc., according to Nancy O'Lone, coordinator for the county Cultural and Heritage Commission. THE CREST HAVEN arts inclusion committee last Wednesday considered 32 proposals "on artistic merit." O'Lone said, and will meet again to discuss

the projects in terms of theme and cost. The $9-million nursing home could have art in as many as six areas. O'Lone said, and the 32 artists submitted a total of 48 proposals. They come from "all over New Jersey and out-of-state," she said. As for the $6-miIlion courts facility renovation, the commission has postponed its July 1 deadline for applications because architect Edwin Howell's details weren't ready, O'Lone said. She said plans now are to accept proposals until Nov. 1. There already have been 40 applications. "Each time we do this, it's blossoming into a much larger project as far as interest from the artists," she said. HOWELL TOLD this I TDD Number j Is 465-2111 ' COURT HOUSE - The Cape May County Sheriff's Department has reminded deaf and hearing impaired people with TDD machines that they can contact the 4 department in emergencies. He was selected by Texas Instruments Inc., Dallas, Tex., for a summer internship. and plans to attend I Dickinson Law School in I the fall.

newspaper the project was on schedule with bids likely to be opened in September, and awarded in October. Construction is estimated at 18 to 24 months. The county will relocate its courts operation to the airport industrial park in Erma (see story elsewhere in this issue). The county is doing the renovation for those temporary quarters itself. The Crest Haven arts inclusion committee includes Freeholder Gerald M. Thornton, architect James McDonald, Planning Director Elwood Jarmer, Crest Haven Director Robert Pastoria, art culsultant Anne Fabbri of the Noyes " Museum, and Linda Cliff and Florence Heal of the commission. The Court Facility Renovation arts inclusion committee includes Freeholder James S. Kilpatrick Jr., architect ' Howell, consultant Lance Balderson of Ocean City, courts administrator Charles E. McCaffery, Jarmer, and Cliff of the commission. O'Lone serves as a nonvoting member of both groups.
