Is it "collectibles" or "collec tables"? You will find it spelled both ways by local antique dealers, and the dictionary accepts both spellings as correct. (The "ible" ending is listed first.) No matter how you spell them. Cape May County has plenty of them, and collectors from all over the country come here by the hundreds every year to get them. What makes a collectible is the marketplace. If collectors collect it, then it is officially a collectible.. If you have ever picked up something in a shop and wondered what the heck it was, why it was for sale, who would ever want to buy it especially for the amount listed on the price tag — you were probably holding a collectible. HERE IS JUST a sample list of what collectors will be looking for. and finding in the local shops this year: nutcrackers, fountain pens, cigar and cigarette paraphanalia including lighters, ashtrays, cigar boxes, holders, snuf boxes, cases, cleaners, clippers, humidors, etc., old toys and dolls, model trains and accessories, real railroadiana, car hood ornaments, Christmas ornaments, clocks, watches, bear steins, flasks, decanters, early advertising, premiums and giveaways, old bottles, baskets, and local indian arrowheads. There are also some dealers where you might find that $1,700 Marvel comic or the $800 bubble gum card. "Primitives" are also very hot locally. These are American handmade country items including: tools, farm implements, kitchen t hings, children 's playthings, and other items, hand-wrought or not which would be found around the homes of early rural Americans. "Primitive"' furniture includes handmade twig tables, willow chairs and corner cabinets, etc Descendants of local Pine
II Barren settlers have iny herited many of these items made from local e dealers from time to time. i (I HAVE a problem with t the term "Primitives" to describe these items. To i me the term should be reserved for the works of » genuinely primitive people f like African, Australian ) and Carribean, South 1 American, tribesmen, t American Indians and the like. I think to put our eany^. 1 settlers in this same\ t category is a bit unfair. I prefer to call them I "Rustics." If you have any thoughts on the matter, drop me a line. ) I Comedians Bob and Ray have a great old routine with some wisdom in it aobul collectors. Ray plays the host of a hobby show whose guest (Bob) is Parnell W. Garr. Mr. Garr's hobby is collecting unusually shaped fruits and vegetables for which he has spent thousands of dollars travelling around the country. "My one problem," says Mr. Garr, "is the lack of a viable commercial display medium." But he beams as he proudly points out how he has neatly arranged his collection in brown paper bags, each labelled with the name of the item, the date and location of acquisition and the same of the person from whom it was purchased. There are strawberries shaped like people, tomatoes shaped like cows, eggplants shaped like stars, etc. "LET'S TAKE a look." says Ray. "Phew!" he shrieks. "It's all rotted. This stuff stinks. You've got nothing but garbage here mister!" Mr Garr is unflustered Perhaps his collection seems like junk to others, but he remains very proud of putting it together It's given him a great deal of pleasure and some interesting memories which he never tires of recounting Most collectors are extremely choosey. They are looking for that special and unique item to add to their collection like the proverI bial upside down postage stamp They do their homework too — researching recent books and periodicals, going to shows and exhibitions, and talking to other collectors. ] They also want their finds ! Meetings Set By La Leche Mothers who wish to breastfeed their babies will find encouragement and information at the Cape or Court House La Leche League. Cape May's next meeting is 7:30 p.m Thursday. July 18. The Court House meeting is 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. July 17. Nursing babies are welcome. For more information call 861-5956 for Court House and 886-4177 for Cape May.
to be in as close to mint condition as possible, or at least easily mendable; no garbage for these people. Most of all, they collect what they collect because they love the stuff, and they love the challenge of finding it. Each acquisition they make is like giving themselves a gift. Next week I'll talk about some sensible collections that you can make from some really interesting things which I've seen in the local shops. I'll' also suggest some of my own experience with collecting. (Arthur Schwerdt, coowner of The August Farmhouse on Route 9 in Swainton, invites questions c/o this newspaper .)
