Nature's Way: Small Fluke Are Grown Up

Nature has a way of lak inn rare of things For the past two years we were blessed with large numliers of small fluke The catches began to exceed good taste and many of the small fish were wasted when anglers caught too many. Lots were thrown away Here it is a year later Nature has spoken The numlx-r of small tish has dropped dramatically We're not rearing the high number reports. as often as we did for the past two years Fluke are bigger, and there are still a lot of them to lie caught. The main season for ocean and lower Delaware Hay fluke fishing is still ahead of us. really WHAT U K -.SAW last ,\\\V\VtV\\A\VV\VV\V ,\\\v\\\v\w\vv\vvvv«\\vv\\v\\\\\\x\\v

year and the year before was a blessing nature bestowed upon us which heralded better fluke years ahead Those little fish which have grown up are now the one to threepounders i oh the scale i thiil we are seeing this year Some will grow to being to to 12-lb. doormats If there are more good breeding years and if everyone remembers that there is a tomorrow, we can look for some good fluke years ahead How did Nature play a role? First, by providing such numbers of fluke Then they Became easy to catch. The fish hogs went to work That's part of nature, too TIIK DOWN cycle and kwmwwwvwwwv

the scarcity of fluke, which is also part of the natural cyclic nature of fish, was not enough to prod the State of New Jersey to im pose a limit on fluke that was reasonable What it took was the tremendous waste of a resource to prod someone into actionAll the 12-inch i scion to be t:s inches in 1986 and 14 inches in 1987 > limit did was tiring New Jersey in line with other states It should have been in effect for years Now that it is. we hope that it is enforced That's as long as both the commercial as well as the rod and reel anglers feel the heavy hand of enforcement equally THERE HAS been a 14-inch minimum for commercial catches for years and we keep wondering where those little fluke come from which we see in the fish counters and where those baby flounders come from which appear on restaurant menus. We're glad to see that most anglers we have talked to are in favor of the regulation and that most are complying. Keep up the good work Meanwhile, fluke fishing

action is picking up in the ocean. Delaware Bay is starting to improve and there are still fluke to be caught in the back bays.
