There was a woman in my shop this week who was an antiques collector and didn't even know it. "Oh. I just browse around in the shops." she said "They're all so interesting. Then, if I see something that I need, or I think will look good in my house — and the price is right — I'll buy it. But I'm not really what you would call a 'collector'." Well we all have to start somewhere, and this lady had the right idea. I started with a lamp. I wondered why, if I needed a lamp, should I limit myself to what was available in the department stores. So off I went to the antique shops, and a whole new world opened for me. I really thought I'd pick up some curious piece of junk and have it rewired. What I wound up with was a creamy white porcelain and gold lamp from 1910. It was as simple and as elegant as you might imagine was the home for which it was first purchased. And it was in perfect working condition. ANI) SO IT HAS become my first suggestion to those who are just starting to col lect antiques that they will rarely go wrong if they begin by collecting decorative and/or useful accessories for their home You can collect for the decor that you now have, or for the one you plan to have; or you may wish to develop your decorating scheme as you collect. You needn't worry too , much in the beginning about investment value. As ) you research and browse you will naturally gain more confidence about spending money Don't be afraid to pick the brains of the local dealers, either They love talking about their collections, and what you can learn from them is worth a fortune in antiques courses, books and magazine subscriptions I1KRK ARK SO M K things I've seen in the local shops here in Cape May County that would make great starter antique collections Kven some of you seasoned collectors might w ant to expand your collections with these buys. VASKS. Who says that these are things you keep in a closet until someone brings you flowers'' They make great decorative accessories. individually, or clustered together bv color, style or shape And I still insist that American pottery vases are the best and wisest buys in the county this season MINI ATI H KS. You needn't have genuine American Sehimmels or Japanese netsukes to have things that will always be fascinating and valuable to collectors. And you can display them anywhere — a few at the base of a lamp, on window sills in any room Use your imagination They're like potato chips — you'll never have enough BARWAKK. There are such good huvs around on these things that I want to gobble them up myself Do they make cocktail shakers like these anymore0 There are so many unique and wonderful glasses, stemware. stirrers, trays, etc.
AH of these things are very useful, easily displayed, and make great gifts. HOLIDAY ITEMS. Don't limit your decorating just to Christmas. There are holidays in every month worthy of special displays. Holiday accessories will always be historical curiosities, and therefore valuable to collectors. OLD TOYS: OLD ' ADVERTISING. There are plenty of these around, especially at shops which specifically indicate "collectibles" on their signs. Old blocks, stuffed animals, dolls, and other toys are accessories that can really enrich a child's room or nursery. Mugs, glasses, trays, plates and calenders with early advertising on them are great to use in the den. playroom or bar. Don't be put off by
prices that might seem too . high. The value of these ] items keeps going up I Check the collectors' price guides Local shop prices are really good. PLATES. The older the better. Or look for the prestige names: Wedgewood. Staffordshire. Lenox. Limoges. Or just follow your whim with such an abundance of beautiful patterns, pictures and colors around to choose from. Plates are probably the number one collectible in the county today. Maybe some week I'll devote a whole column to plates. I know we'll be talking about collectibles a^ain real soon. NEXT WEEK: We'll start talking about furniture with a look at butterflies and piecrusts. Yes. TABLES - types, styles, woods and finishes.
